Family owned and operated, now run by siblings Barbara Brittin and Richard Kinnear, Britkin Construction has been at the forefront of food processing and storage facilities since their father Gordon Kinnear first pioneered the establishment of cool store and controlled environment innovations for the meat and food sectors. “There was always enough room for two coolstore developments on the Sunfruit site so when the option became available and I knew GEK were on the lookout for another tenant I successfully introduced them to Rockit,” says Britkin managing director, Richard Kinnear. “Then we put together a proposal for the Rockit Coolstore build and came up with a full design working with Strata Group. “The earthworks started in January last year and construction a couple of months later.” Richard says that over the years they have developed relationships with a wide range of build partners including designers, structural engineers, Geotech engineers and quality trades businesses. He says that they all play their part in giving Britkin Construction the confidence to know they can achieve their projects on time and on budget. Having a consistent and reliable team of subcontractors who move from project to project, with each individual trade taking responsibility for their time frame within the critical pathway, is part and parcel of the projects’ successful delivery. Building coolstores in the Hawke’s Bay region primarily means building them to store apples and, having delivered several of them over the years, Britkin Construction has also built up significant IP around what that takes, explains Richard.
