TRANSPORT R and L Beale Log Transport T T Hugh de Lacy “The bonus for us is not having to meet maintenance and repair schedules for those trucks as we routinely do for our other trucks, old and new, for that first five years.” Scoring a five-star rating first time up in the Log Transport Safety Council (LTSC) accreditation audit was a huge endorsement of the work ethics at Hawke’s Bay company R and L Beale Log Transport Ltd. Founded by Ray and Louise Beale in Clive in 2015 with an ancient Kenworth bought for just $50,000, the company has exploded in size, and today operates no fewer than 25 trucks. Of those, nine are owned by Ray’s father Trevor Beale, who contracts to R and L Beale Log Transport, driving his MAN self-loader full-time, with six operated by other ownerdrivers and the rest by Ray and Louise. They collectively transport 316,000 tonnes of logs a year. “The five-star LTSC ranking was pretty awesome to get at our first attempt, and we see that as proof of our growth and dedication to the industry,” Louise says. The management team of five is headed by Louise as an owner-director, looking after Health & Safety and book-keeping. Besides Louise, there is another administrator, plus a dispatcher and a yard manager, working from the Hastings base. Until recently, R and L Beale Log Transport preferred Kenworth trucks – Ray was always a big fan of them – but their latest purchase reflects a move away from the American brand to a Swedish one. “We were attracted to Scania by their Scan-Plan, under which you don’t pay for maintenance for the first five years,” Louise says. “The bonus for us is not having to meet maintenance and repair schedules for those trucks as we routinely do for our other trucks, old and new, for that first five years.” As a registered nurse for 25 years, Louise is the Health and Safety guru to the company’s 30 staff, encouraging them to pursue unit standards under the NZ Qualifications Authority regime, while also working with Mito, a company providing education and training. “I coach the staff in fire safety, CPR and first aid, and our people’s knowledge and ability in those areas obviously impressed the Transport Safety Council enough to award our five-star rating,” she says. Serving forest owners that include Forest 360, PF Olsen, John Turkington, Saathof Forestry Services, Waipa Forestry, Mahia Forestry and Harvest Logistics, R and L Beale’s qualifications in log transport are supplemented by its involvement with Competenz and Mito, providing qualifications around loading and the other skills associated with the trade. “We currently have two trucks down in Nelson assisting with the demand there, returning the favour to Drummonds Transport, who helped us during Cyclone Gabrielle by taking a couple of our trucks in that desperate time,” Louise says. “We also recently started a firewood delivery for our son Kaiden, who’s 15, and passionate about motor-sport – he races a mini stock-car with R and L Beale as major sponsor – and starting an engineering course this year, while our daughter Sophie, 19, is at university studying anaesthetics. “R and L Beale Log Transport will continue to grow and strive for excellence in the industry.” Keeping Hawke’s Bay rolling! 24/7 CALL-OUT SERVICE FOR WHEN YOU NEED US MOST ADVANCED WHEEL ALIGNMENTS FOR A SMOOTHER, SAFER DRIVE LOCAL EXPERTS YOU CAN TRUST - BIG OR SMALL, WE DO IT ALL 06 843 9119 onekawa@baytyres.co.nz baytyres.co.nz COMPLETE MECHANICAL SERVICING FOR ALL LIGHT AND HEAVY TRANSPORT EQUIPMENT • Wide range of products for all transport needs • Full engine rebuilds • Quality workmanship • Competitive rates • 24/7 call-out service • Full range of diagnostic tooling for all makes & models Workshop manager - Jacob 027 217 7013 | admin@hbhd.co.nz | 32 Severn Street, Pandora, Napier www.hbheavydiesel.co.nz
