| 43 T T Sue Russell Outlook strong as firmmarks 50 years Molloy Joinery has earned a top reputation for designing and building quality bespoke furniture. JOINERY Molloy Joinery Kevin Molloy started a joinery business in Napier that half a century later is now led by his son Simon, who, along with an experienced team of skilled tradespeople, has accrued a reputation for designing and building bespoke furniture. Simon took over nearly a decade ago, and during the course of those years has supported many to gain experiences and qualifications in the trade. Simon acknowledges business had been challenging in recent times; however, following a small restructuring phase, has now adapted to these market conditions. “We have a team of 15 on board these days, and I’m definitely picking up more positive signs, with more pricing and enquiry,” he says. Simon’s key responsibilities, day-to-day, are taking care of pricing, design work and staff liaison, plenty to keep him fully engaged, he says. A new CNC machine has been purchased and is now fully operational, having been installed last November. “We stayed with the same brand we were familiar with and knew we could rely on to perform to the quality we expected.” A CNC machine, Simon explains, provides the ability and accuracy to undertake jobs you wouldn’t normally do. “You can do multiple tasks on a CNC machine, creating certainty and efficiency. It’s a key technology in our workshop.” And there’s a good variety of work currently underway, including designing and building pods for a school in Gisborne, a large project for a developer, and a wonderful project building bespoke traditional cedar joinery. “It’s been great to use our skill set keeping the old knowledge alive. These days, you don’t often have the opportunity to do work of this nature using solid timber. It’s going to look amazing when completed, with all timber windows and doors. Our team is really enjoying this work.” The year ahead, Simon says, feels like a corner has been turned in the market, given the level of enquiry and the number of quoted jobs that have been accepted to date. “I think by later in the year, things will have picked up well, as the residential build sector becomes more active.” The plan is to take on an apprentice at some point this year. Training the next generation in the important skills that make a great joiner is something Simon is passionate about. “We’ve been around so long now that we’ve seen many young people gain their joinery qualifications and go on to do very well. It’s an amazing trade to have.” Molloy Joinery is a member of the Master Joiners Association.
