Renovation Hawke’s Bay BUILDING As the name Renovation Hawke’s Bay clearly suggests, the core activity and building passion for owners Jeremy Evans and Ben Hazelwood lies in the transformation and refurbishment of existing home spaces – it’s their focus, and a pursuit that provides a great deal of satisfaction. Jeremy’s history in renovations stems back to when he first completed his apprenticeship; contracting then for a renovation company. “I started to get help from other builders, and we formed our own company with a couple of shareholders. That was back in 2019, and before you knew it we were straight into Covid, but we managed OK. We’ve been pretty steady,” Jeremy says. In all, the team comprises seven builders, enough to be managing large and smaller projects side by side. Jeremy says this works well, especially with renovations. “Sometimes there are delays, or you’re waiting for something, given renovations can have their unexpected moments. In cases such as these, it’s always good to have smaller jobs to go on with. It’s important for me to keep the team busy.” He is also a firm believer that renovations and the like are fertile ground for apprentices to cut their teeth. “You have to be thinking on your feet all the time, and these are valuable skills for those new to the trade to acquire, which will always stand them in good stead as they progress their careers.” Key to a successful outcome is to keep communication between all parties flowing well. If this is in place, then when something unexpected happens, a solution is found through having a conversation. It’s also important, Jeremy says, to have a team of tradies that answer their phones and get back in touch readily. “There’s a great deal of coordination and timing, people coming and going through a renovation, and the tradies I use are very reliable and accessible,” he says. Jeremy says in the past four months or so, he has stepped away from the physical building tasks to concentrate on meeting people, project managing and ensuring the team on-site have all they need to work efficiently. “Ben is our head builder. He looks after the site work once a build is underway, and between us and great admin support we have the bases covered to procure and manage projects,” he says. He believes the business is in a positive situation. “We’re fortunate to have solid support from businesses such as Gardiner Knobloch Accountants, Riley Bros Plumbing & Electrical and TW Roofing, who have contributed their skills towards our success. We certainly value these relationships.” Projects come up all over Hawke’s Bay, and some take on massive proportions, as is the case with a completely gutted 270sqm house on Railway Road, Hastings. “These clients allowed us to strip everything out and were just perfect to work with. The whole job went so well; they knew what they wanted, our draftsman prepared the drawings, which went through Council really well.” The most challenging part to the build was retro-fitting new windows, Jeremy says. “It was such a satisfying project, knowing you’re creating a new home for a family to enjoy living in.
