BUILDING Hanna Construction “It shows the level of planning and attention to detail we can offer to take a project to the next level.” For more than 40 years, Hanna Construction has been a quiet mainstay of the Wellington building scene, a familyowned company that has earned a reputation for quality, craftsmanship and a distinctly personal approach. Founded in 1983 by John Hanna, the business remains firmly in family hands, with John and his wife Christine still serving as directors, and their son, Ben Hanna, working alongside his father as a construction manager. “It’s a very personal approach to building,” explains Ben. “The clients can build a relationship with us. That’s what makes us different. We remember that when we’re building someone’s home, we are creating their most important asset, so it should be of no lesser standard than we would accept if we were building our own home.” The company has grown steadily while maintaining the close-knit ethos that has guided it from the beginning. Christine manages administration, ensuring the business runs smoothly behind the scenes, while John and Ben both remain hands-on with project management and building. It also relies on a trusted team of contractors, many of whom have worked with the company for years. Its longevity and approach were affirmed in 2024 when it won a Regional Gold at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards for Wellington and Wairarapa, in the $1.5 million to $2 million category. The winning project was designed by Prime Designs. “Three different claddings added a level of complexity,” explains Ben. “Because the house is tall, the claddings draw the eye upwards and the claddings go from the outside to the inside of the house. “So when you’re standing in the hallway or looking at the fireplace you can see that external cladding come inside. The challenge was to make this seamless.” The result was a four-bedroom home perched on the Whitby ridge, wrapped in Cemintel Territory, vertical James Hardie Oblique and vertical TruWood cladding. Inside, the natural materials continue with oak flooring, a striking floating staircase, and a high stud with skylights. ‘ Expansive kwila decks wrap around the house to capture the views, while a zoned central heating system and advanced security technology complete the picture of refined comfort. “It shows the level of planning and attention to detail we can offer to take a project to the next level,” says Ben. The company’s current workload reflects its ability to balance substantial new builds with high-end renovations. It has just completed a 205sqm single-level family spec home in Aotea. The four-bedroom, open-plan home tailored for modern living was snapped up shortly after launch to market. Although known for residential builds, the business also undertakes complex renovations, re-cladding work, light commercial construction and project management. It is about to begin several renovation projects across the region. Ben says a key factor in the company’s success is that it has built up a good relationship over the years with architects, designers, consultants and contractors. It has been a member of the Master Builders Association for 40 years, and John has previously served on the executive board, been involved in several Master Builders House of the Year awards, and promoted multiple apprentices in Master Builders Apprentice of the Year competitions. The company is also a licensed building practitioner and a HazardCo member. “Many clients return decades after their first project, drawn back by our straightforward honest approach and workmanship that has defined the business since its early days,” says Ben. “That’s the best accolade we could hope for.” EXPERTS IN CONSTRUCTION Residenal, Commercial, Renovaons, Re-cladding www.hannaconstruction.co.nz MEMBER OF ROOFING ASSOCIATION N.Z. 55 Kenepuru Drive Unit 1, Porirua | P.O Box 51330, Tawa 5249 0508 DR ROOF ( 0508 377 663 ) | 021 432 532 office@wlr.co.nz | wgtnlightweightroofing.co.nz W E L L I N G T O N LIGHTWEIGHT ROOFING LTD NEW & RE-ROOFING SPECIALISTS CERTIFIED ROOFER MEMBER OF ROOFING ASSOCIATION N.Z.
