LIFESTYLE Summerset Group Holdings: Kelvin Grove Village T T Sue Russell Welcoming a new Summerset Retirement Village is always an exciting endeavour for those most closely connected to its birth, and such is the case with the development of Summerset’s Kelvin Grove village, located in ideal surroundings just five minutes’ drive from the centre of Palmerston North. Summerset Group Holdings’ construction manager, Andrew King, says Summerset Kelvin Grove will offer an array of independent living and care options, catering for a broad cohort of residents. “We know when we build a new village in a centre it brings so much value to the community, providing people in the district and further afield, who may be considering a lifestyle change, or who need the range of support models our village’s offer, with really valuable choice. We see this same thing happening here in Palmerston North when the Kelvin Grove village opens early 2027.” To get the project underway and create the space for the necessary infrastructure to be laid has been a massive engineering process, with some 60,000 cubic metres of earth shifted across the nine-hectare site on Te Hirawanui Drive, purchased in 2011. Project manager, Adam Fahey, says the project is progressing well. “As is so often the case, all the work to lay the services in and around the site and to create the roading is the unseen essential work that lays the foundation for the village being built above. So far, this has gone very well, with an experienced team of civil works contractors at the helm.” Adam says Palmerston North City Council has been excellent to work with, describing the relationship as collaborative. When assessing the value of a potential site, several factors come into play. In the case of the Kelvin Grove village, Summerset recognised a strong underlying demand in Palmerston North for a modern retirement village with a continuum of care offering. Especially important was the site’s close proximity to everyday amenities, supporting convenience and independence for residents. “There’s excellent connectivity to local amenities and the Palmerston North city centre via public transport, walking and cycling networks, as well as by vehicle,” says Andrew. Summerset Kelvin Grove, once completed, will offer an array of amenities for residents to enjoy, including a café, gym, library, bowling green, putting greens and outdoorswimming pool. “We’ve got ample space to develop these amenities on the site. When we think about the use of these outdoor areas we factor in providing activities of interest when grandchildren visit.” The village will be home to serviced apartments, homes in the care centre, along with a mix of two- and three-bedroom villas. “This village has been designed to have really good functionality and mix,” says Andrew. An orchard borders one side of the village, along with a housing estate nearby. Andrew says there has already been interest shown from locals in what is happening on the site. At the end of November another five blocks will be completed, giving a real sense to how soon the village will be buzzing with life. “Building an entire new village is a massive undertaking, but it’s one we have a long history achieving. Whenever possible, given the scale of these types of developments, we endeavour to engage local contractors, bringing direct economic benefits to the region we’re building in,” Andrew explains.
