T T to page 38 Amtech Medical has officially opened its new headquarters in Whanganui, featuring New Zealand’s first robotic warehouse dedicated to healthcare product distribution. The cutting-edge facility at 32 Mill Road encompasses over 5400sqm of warehouse space, 1629sqm of canopy and 786sqm of architecturally designed offices, complete with an executive suite featuring a high-end fit-out. “Our robotic warehouse has been in the making for the past seven to eight years, and we’ve basically travelled the globe and looked at American-based models and brought that smart technology to the healthcare industry in New Zealand. There is nothing else like it here,” says Rick Anderson Amtech Medical chief marketing officer. He says the automated system represents a dramatic departure from traditional healthcare distribution methods across the industry, with key benefits for customers being faster supply and a greater range of products than ever before. “So traditionally what would happen is a healthcare distributor would have a very large warehouse with old-style racking and forklifts. Our approach means this warehouse is very compact,” explains Rick. The sophisticated robotic technology enables huge efficiency within the streamlined facility. “We have a big zone in our warehouse that is fenced off with the robots with 8000 SKUs that can be stored in an area the size of a football field. The robots are constantly bringing the SKUs out to the pickers. This approach maximises storage capacity and minimises the physical footprint required for operations.” He says the technological advancement significantly enhances the company’s operational capabilities and future potential. “We’ve essentially ensured that our capacity to grow into the future is scalable and have increased our capabilities for logistical services by about eight times,” explains Rick. “This huge improvement in efficiency allows us to handle substantially more orders while maintaining the rapid service standards that have become our hallmark. Being based in Whanganui we can reach 85% of New Zealand with overnight service.” www.bbconstruction.co.nz We don’t aim for excellence. We deliver it. This is for the primary healthcare market – private medical practices – and we can now get more large-scale international agencies and become their distribution partner for Australia and New Zealand.” It’s also enabled the company to offer standalone logistics services to other medical product companies. “We can now both supply and distribute to our own extensive client base, as well as offer comprehensive logistical services to international companies seeking to reach Australian and New Zealand markets,” says Rick. The project was delivered through a partnership between family-owned construction companies BB Construction and Attika (formerly XL Structural). BB Construction has brought significant expertise to the complex project.
