A local authority preferred contractor, Sierra Delta Civil delivers a wide range of projects for local government agencies, commercial clients and private residential clients throughout the wider Wellington region. Owned by husband and wife team Sam and Melissa Dews, the company won the 2025 Civil Contractors New Zealand Wellington Wairarapa Branch Contractor Image Award. “The award is voted for by other contractors and suppliers in CCNZ, and they’re voting for your company image and professionalism,” Sam says. “It’s made up of the presentation of our fleet of equipment, the work that we produce, how tidy all our equipment is, how our staff look on our sites, how they present themselves and how professional they are.” Sam and Melissa founded Sierra Delta Civil seven years ago with just a digger, a truck and a ute, with Sam having previously worked in his father’s large civil construction business which closed when his father took early retirement. “I was one of the general managers there.” Sierra Delta Civil employs 15 multi-skilled staff. “Steadily over that seven-year time we’ve taken on 10 other staff from that company; my sister works for us, doing the accounting and health and safety.” The business has grown organically through its high standard of project delivery by its highly qualified civil works team, combining technical knowledge, specialist skills and practical experience to consistently deliver quality outcomes. “We are quite a multi-skilled company; we’ve got staff that are drainlayers but are also builders, and others that are concreters and asphalters and currently doing their water reticulation qualification.” “We don’t hold all our eggs in one basket and that’s been our saving grace with a tougher economy over the last couple of years – we’ve been able to diversify and follow the market trends.” Sierra Delta Civil was the main contractor for the redevelopment of Walter Mildenhall Park in Naenae after being awarded the $1.85 million project through a competitive tender process. A key to winning the tender was the inclusion of three years post-project maintenance in addition to competitive pricing, along with Sierra Delta Civil already being a Hutt City Council preferred contractor with a well established reputation. The opening of the park, located next to the new Te Ngaengae Pool, marked the completion of the Whakatupu Ngaengae project to revitalise Naenae’s town centre in a partnership between the community and the council. Sierra Delta Civil started groundwork in the first week of January this year and completed its work on August 20. The scope of works included new pathways, garden beds, play elements, wet pour surfacing, seating and skate features, laying 2900 square metres of lawn and planting 6200 plants and shrubs. It was timely for Sierra Delta to win the tender, Sam says. “At that point we didn’t really have a lot of large scale projects – it was all small scale work. It was quite exciting. It was really good for team morale and team spirit, everyone coming together on one project.
