Led by managing director Royce Bowler, the business has grown from a small Otaki operation into a Kapiti-wide service with two depots and a secure vehicle storage facility. The business covers breakdowns, towing and salvage, and minor repairs for vehicles of all sizes, including motorcycles, motorhomes, and large commercial trucks. Technological changes, such as electric vehicles, present new challenges, but Royce says the approach is the same – get the customer moving safely and quickly. “Our business is 98% reactive,” Royce says. “Breakdowns and accidents don’t make appointments – they just happen! Always out of the blue, and usually at the most inconvenient time.” That unpredictability hasn’t stopped Kapiti Coast Towing from establishing itself as a trusted service provider. From flat tyres and battery issues to full-scale vehicle recoveries, the team is equipped to get drivers back on the road, fast. “Most people don’t think about us until they’re stuck. The first thing they’ll do is Google who to call, and that’s where our reputation counts.” Kapiti Coast Towing started at the end of the second Covid lockdown. Royce and his wife Fiona stepped away from a family-run mechanical workshop and decided to focus solely on towing, breakdowns, and salvage. Since forming, they have grown from a husband-and-wife team to a team of six staff, and expanded from their depot in Otaki, with a population of about 10,000, to Paraparaumu, which serves roughly 30,000 residents. Their growth included purchasing the former Kapiti TenPin bowling alley in Paraparaumu, now a 1750sqm warehouse acting as a second depot and forward base, housing half the fleet and providing secure vehicle storage. “From our two bases, we have complete coverage of the entire Kapiti Coast region.” Kapiti Coast Towing is a preferred service provider for breakdown organisations such as NZAA Roadservice, AMI Roadside Rescue, First Rescue, NZ Roadside Assistance, Tesla Roadside, Marshall Batteries and all insurance companies such as; State Insurance, AMI, NZI, AA Insurance, Vero, Covi and IAG. “Those relationships are built on performance, integrity and trust,” Royce says. “Their customers trust them and us by association. We’ve got the equipment, skills and experience to recover vehicles safely and efficiently, and our team treats every job with integrity. Our customers rely on us to do the right thing.” Royce notes the challenges of running a 24/7 towing business. “The impact on family life is the biggest. You never know when the next call will come. Sometimes, the start of the month is quiet, and by the end we realise we could have taken a weekend off.
