Established in the 1950s, Architects 44 is a legacy business that is named for the physical space its offices occupy, in a nod to their local heritage. Architects 44’s 12 diverse and dynamic staff includes a mix of registered architects, graduates and technicians, and project managers. While it is primarily a commercial firm, the team is well equipped to deliver every type of project from commercial and institutional buildings to marae, restoration work for historic buildings, earthquake strengthening and residential. A key client of Architects 44 is local iwi, with around 15 iwi-related projects on the go at any one time. Dan says the team at Architects 44 works to seven values – exploration, teamwork, professionalism, having fun, taking ownership, connections and creativity – created in collaboration with indigenous artist Mark Kopua, and Morley Design. Named Ihi Rangi, the seven values are represented by five kites (manu tukutuku) allowed to fly freely over the sun (ra) and ocean (moana). “We are woven into the fabric in Te Tairawhiti,” Dan says. “We focus on work in our rohe; we have been here a long time, and we want to be here for a long time still.
