PCB New Zealand “There’s an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area opening out to a huge deck looking over the Days Bay Tennis Club and a 270-degree view of the harbour, all built with good permanent materials to a high-specification and detailing.” BUILDING Alan Marshall has been building since he left school at 15 and he still enjoys it 45 years later. The name of his company PCB New Zealand Ltd. acknowledges the builder he used to be in business with under the name Peter Camp Builders. He met Peter when he was the Construction Manager on Wellington’s Park Road Post build and Peter was the Project Manager. By the time that job was finished in 2005 Alan had bought 50% of Peter’s company and they remained in business together until Peter retired in 2019 and Alan took over as sole owner, rebranding to PCB New Zealand Ltd. Although Alan has a variety of commercial projects behind him including gems like Coffee Supreme in Hopper Street, St Barnabus Church in Roseneath, and the Batts and Roxy Theatres, his bread and butter was and still is high-end houses. “Those sorts of projects generally find us through some sort of connection; we don’t rely on one architect for our work. “Our last build in Days Bay was a repeat client we’d built a substantial home for 12 years ago around Oriental Parade, and we built them a compact home when they wanted to downsize,” says Alan. From demolishing the existing house all the way through to finishing the landscaping, garage, courtyard and any other external work required, Alan and his team took pride in delivering these repeat clients an immaculate two-storey 174sqm home complete with features designed to allow them to stay there for the long term. “It was well thought through so that they could eventually live downstairs if there were mobility issues. “There’s an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area opening out to a huge deck looking over the Days Bay Tennis Club and a 270-degree view of the harbour, all built with good permanent materials to a high-specification and detailing,” says Alan. That build came on the heels of a house in Paraparaumu which Alan considers to be one of the better builds of his 45 years on the job. Built with a precast concrete ground floor and topped by a roof with a 23-degree pitch on an 8-degree rake. “It wasn’t a straightforward house by any means,” he says. The PCB New Zealand team of seven includes three qualified builders, the indispensable office lady who keeps everything running smoothly in the office, a hammerhand who’s been with Alan since he and Peter went into business together off the back of the Park Road Post Build, an apprentice, and Alan himself. Over the years Alan has trained more than 35 apprentices and he always follows the same system as he shares his own skills and experience, he explains. “I have a list of tools that I expect everybody that works for me to have so that everybody’s equal and I buy my apprentices a full carpenter’s tool kit the day I sign them up. “It’s about $6500 worth of tools and I expect that to be paid back at around $30 to $50 a week and usually when they’ve finished their time, they’ve paid the tools off. I’ve never had anybody run off and not pay me.” Like the projects they’ve trained on, Alan’s apprentices generally come to him through word of mouth, and he enjoys running into them years later as successful sole traders just as he enjoys seeing the beautifully finished buildings scattered throughout the Wellington region that are a testament to his craft and to theirs.
