T T Kelly Deeks Carpenter Jono White’s own architecturally designed home is a live showcase of the craftsmanship, planning, and problem-solving that have underpinned his building company, Eternal Build, since 2017. The small Wellington business is expanding its network across residential construction, with a focus on high-end new builds, renovations, kitchens, and bathrooms, while progressing Jono’s striking builder’s own project at Pukerua Bay. Based in Porirua, Eternal Build has built a reputation for taking on technically demanding work and delivering quality finishes across a range of residential projects. “We are a small building company, but we have plenty of experience in residential construction, generally specialising in higher-end builds,” Jono says. The centrepiece of the company’s current workload is Jono’s own two-level family home, designed by Hamish White of ETAL Architecture. At about 270sqm, the modern residence has been created as a complete contrast to the family’s current 1920s California bungalow. “We wanted something completely different and a bit grand,” Jono says. “It is a modern design with some challenging details, like structural steel portals and a lot of height. The upper level is around four and a half metres, so there are some big elements to manage.” Set inland above Pukerua Bay, the site captures expansive views towards Kapiti Island, helping inspire a design that maximises outlook, light, and modern living. “This site has such a nice outlook, so it’s worth doing something really special.” The project also carries strong personal meaning for the White family. Jono and his wife bought one of five neighbouring sections around five years ago, with four close friends purchasing the others. Today, all five homes are either complete or underway, creating a close-knit community of young families. Jono says being both the client and the builder has given him a rare opportunity to work closely with the architect, while balancing design ambition with practical construction outcomes. Recent progress milestones have included foundations and slab work, with the framing stage now well advanced. “Having the slab poured was a huge milestone,” Jono says. “When you are building for clients, you often come in after earthworks and groundwork. Doing a lot of that myself on the digger made it a real achievement.” Like many in the sector, Eternal Build is navigating rising supplier costs and ongoing pressure from fuel prices, but Jono says broad experience across renovations and complex builds helps the company adapt. “If you have only ever built standard homes, some of these projects can be challenging,” he says. “We do high-end builds, but we also do average homes, renovations, bathrooms, and all sorts of work. That variety gives us a lot of experience.” Eternal Build’s approach is based on honesty, efficiency, and staying solutions- focused in an industry where conditions can change quickly. “We just try to do the best job we can for clients and make the process as efficient as possible,” Jono says. “A lot of building is problem-solving. Things change all the time, whether it is weather, supply, or site conditions. You adapt, keep moving, and do the best job possible.”
