T T Virginia Wright Design Builders Hawke’s Bay doesn’t build homes from templates — every home is a one-off, designed around each client’s lifestyle, site, and budget, from concept through to completion. It’s been this way for over 34 years, with the company delivering longevity and consistency with a true design-and-build approach. Owned and operated by Tara Todd and Trent Bartle, Design Builders Hawke’s Bay is part of a nationwide network across 12 regions of New Zealand. They are supported by a shared architectural design centre, along with marketing, accounting, and operational support. This structure keeps overheads lean, provides strong buying power, and brings a faster turnaround on design work. Having an in-house team means there are no handovers to external architects, or gaps between design and buildability. It creates a more seamless process, reduces delays, and keeps costs more efficient than with traditional architectural routes. Being born and bred in Hawke’s Bay means Tara and Trent know the land exceptionally well. “All the different sites and subdivisions, and how each area works,” says Tara. “Trent’s an ex-builder, so we’re designing with a builder’s practicality in mind. He then manages the build from start to finish.” The process starts with the site. If clients don’t already have land, Tara and Trent help secure it before moving into the design brief and build process. Tara uses a comprehensive questionnaire to capture every detail, from what you see when you open the front door to whether there’s wall space for a specific piece of art. No matter how complex the project, they focus on making the process simple and enjoyable. A recent example of that was a project where the clients wanted to recreate their 1910 heritage villa on their front lawn. “Our approach meant the home was shaped entirely around how our clients wanted to live,” says Tara. “We replicated the villa with all the conveniences of modern living. They didn’t want it to feel out of place, they wanted it to feel it had always been there.” Throughout every build, Trent keeps everything on track: timelines, quality, and communication, and ensuring the design is delivered as intended. Clients experience the entire process as collaborative, clear, and rewarding. Design Builders Hawke’s Bay has built a strong reputation through satisfied clients, industry recognition, and award-winning work. Their homes range from rural properties framing expansive views to compact urban dwellings, each designed around how people live. “Across Hawke’s Bay, we offer house-andland packages, full build services, and specialist knockdown and rebuild projects, which are becoming increasingly popular,” says Tara. Design Builders Hawke’s Bay build homes that fit the client’s life, rather than forcing their life to fit a home. Tara and Trent’s focus remains always on the client, and clients love working with them. Having them guide the process from concept through to completion means not having to deal with multiple contractors with competing priorities. Unique homes designed to please
