Kaweka Hospital’s second stage – the Kaweka Specialist Centre & Ward – is one of the finalists for a 2026 Warren and Mahoney Civic, Health and Arts Property Award. The calibre of project finalists for this award is remarkable, including BNZ Theatre, Hamilton; Endoscopy Auckland; the New Zealand International Convention Centre, Auckland; Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, Christchurch; Te Rua Archives New Zealand, Wellington; and The Court Theatre, Christchurch. The awards dinner and ceremony takes place on June 12. “It’s a real honour to be recognised alongside such incredible contenders,” says Kaweka Hospital general manager Nick Pullan. “We’re immensely proud of our facility – not only the care delivered within it, but also the architecture, thoughtful design elements and the taonga incorporated throughout the build, all of which make it feel truly special.” Kaweka Hospital was founded by a group of local clinicians for the people of Hawke’s Bay, to provide the region’s growing population with more healthcare and additional surgical procedures. It opened in 2022 with four operating theatres, along with post- procedure recovery facilities and overnight beds. Kaweka Specialist Centre and Ward, which opened last July as Kaweka’s second stage, is a new, three-storey building with dedicated clinic spaces and specialist health-provider services spanning cancer care and imaging, cardiology, ENT, eye care, urology and other surgical support. Expanding the Kaweka Health Campus from a surgical centre to include a specialist centre and dedicated ward floor was a deliberate step to provide a wider range of healthcare services for the Hawke’s Bay community, all under one roof. “The extension of services for cancer patients, for example, means patients can access a coordinated approach to care with diagnostic imaging, specialist consultations and treatment services all in one location through our partnership with Canopy Cancer Care and Canopy Imaging,” Nick says “Likewise, there are now cardiac treatments available onsite with G&H Cardiovascular that patients traditionally had to travel out of the region for,” he says. “Working with our colleagues in ENT Hawke’s Bay, Hawke’s Bay General Surgeons and Eye Institute, our stage 2 facility offers a huge range of healthcare to the Hawke’s Bay community. We’ve also recently purchased a robotic-assisted surgery system, meaning Kawaka is now able to offer the highest standard of care available globally.” As well, the Kaweka Specialist Centre has its own trendy yet affordable café, Flatties Café, a popular location for staff, visitors and walk-ins from the street, with all welcome. The hospital and specialist buildings – physically linked by an internal corridor, ensuring the safety and security of staff and patients – were designed by the same team to function in a seamless and connected way. “While they were constructed at different times, the intention for the two buildings was always front of mind,” Nick says. Napier-based Architecture HDT delivered the design, while clinical health planner Ruth Whitehead designed internal functionality. Project manager Nick Ward, of PML, worked closely alongside the lead building contractor, Gemco. Kaweka Health’s management staff members were consulted throughout to ensure their voices were heard and considered. “What began as a bold vision in 2020 has grown into a thriving, community-focused facility delivering vital health services to thousands of people across the region,” says Nick. “It has been fantastic having the specialist services join us at Kaweka and see that expansion of services to our patients. “It has been a huge undertaking for everyone involved. It’s a remarkable addition for the people of Hawke’s Bay, strengthening the region’s health infrastructure for generations to come.”
