T T Karen Phelps “Because we are family, there is no disconnect between trades. Everyone understands the same expectations and takes responsibility for the end result.” Riley Brothers Construction is continuing to expand across Hawke’s Bay, with its family-run structure forming the foundation of the company’s approach to building, collaboration and client relationships. Founded in 2021 by Blue Riley, the company undertakes residential construction projects, with plumbing, electrical and associated services provided through Riley Brothers Plumbing and Electrical, which is owned by Blue’s brothers, Moses and Anzac. Together the family delivers a coordinated service to customers. “Being a family-run business is what makes everything work so smoothly for our clients,” says Blue. “We trust each other completely and that flows directly into the projects we deliver.” The company’s model is designed to offer clients a single point of contact for entire projects, rather than requiring multiple independent contractors. Blue says the integrated structure means projects can be managed internally from the ground up, reducing delays and improving communication between trades. Moses oversees plumbing and drainage, and Anzac manages electrical services and climate systems, allowing each discipline to be led by a dedicated specialist within the family. “We all work closely together across every stage of a build,” says Blue. “Because we are family, there is no disconnect between trades. Everyone understands the same expectations and takes responsibility for the end result.” Blue says the family aspect of the business extends beyond ownership and into day-today operations on-site, where communication and trust between team members are central to delivery. The company employs four core builders along with additional contractors as needed, enabling it to manage multiple projects while maintaining a consistent standard of workmanship. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT “It makes a real difference knowing you are working alongside people who share your values and care about the outcome in the same way you do,” says Blue. “That is what clients feel when they work with us.” Blue says this approach has become increasingly important as demand for housing grows and clients look for more efficient ways to manage complex builds. One of its key current projects is a two- storey, four-bedroom home in Ahuriri, Napier, undertaken in collaboration with Atkinson Harwood Architecture. The 256sqm property includes open-plan living and dining areas, and is due for completion in mid-2026. Construction of another four-bedroom home has recently commenced in Parklands, Napier, also designed in partnership with Atkinson Harwood Architecture, continuing an established working relationship between the two companies. Riley Brothers Construction currently operates across Hawke’s Bay, focusing primarily on new-build housing as well as undertaking renovations and smaller projects, such as decks and fencing. Blue says the long-term goal is to continue growing the business, as well as preserving its family-first approach, which he believes sets it apart in a competitive construction market and results in a more personal build experience for clients. “At the end of the day, we are building homes for people, and we take that responsibility seriously. As family we back each other, and we back our clients. That’s what makes us different.”
