T T Russell Fredric “Once people can see what their system is doing, they start thinking differently about when they use power, and that’s where they really notice the savings.” Hillmac Electrical is expanding its solar offering across Hawke’s Bay, with growing demand for energy independence reshaping how homes, farms and businesses approach power use. The company has built its name across residential, commercial and industrial electrical work, but solar is becoming an increasing area of momentum. What began as installation work for other providers has shifted into a fully integrated service, with the business now handling system design, supply, installation and follow up service in-house. Solar lead Chris Cooper says that change has allowed the team to focus more closely on quality and outcomes for clients. “We’ve moved into doing our own design and supply, which gives us more control and means systems are tailored properly to each customer.” That shift comes during a period of rapid change in the solar sector. Falling equipment costs during the past five years, combined with rising electricity prices, have significantly improved the value proposition for customers. The business is now completing two to three residential installs each week, with a dedicated solar team of five within a wider staff of around 22. System design sits at the centre of the process, with each installation shaped around how a property uses energy. Residential, rural and commercial projects all require different thinking, particularly when it comes to load requirements and daily usage patterns. Homes are typically designed around household consumption and available roof space, while farms and commercial sites often involve higher demand equipment such as pumps, workshops or processing facilities. Those systems require more detailed planning to ensure they can meet operational needs both now and into the future. Chris says taking a tailored approach is critical. “If you get the design wrong at the start, that’s when systems don’t perform how people expect, so getting that right is everything.” Battery storage is also becoming a more prominent part of installations, particularly for those looking to reduce reliance on the grid. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Systems can store excess generation for later use, while integrated apps allow customers to monitor performance and adjust how they use electricity. That visibility is changing behaviour, with many users shifting activities such as heating water or running appliances into daylight hours to maximise solar generation. “Once people can see what their system is doing, they start thinking differently about when they use power, and that’s where they really notice the savings.” Beyond the technology, the company’s approach is grounded in keeping work in-house and maintaining consistency across projects. That includes design, installation and ongoing support, which provides reassurance for customers making a long-term investment. The business has also seen increasing interest from commercial clients, with opportunities emerging as more sectors electrify operations and look to manage rising energy costs. Chris says solar will continue to play an important supporting role in the wider energy system. “It’s not going to replace everything, but it will be a key part of how we generate and use power, especially as demand keeps growing.” That outlook is matched by a steady, relationship-focused approach within the team, with an emphasis on reliability and doing the job properly. “You want to know the company you’re dealing with will still be there in 20 years. That comes down to looking after your staff, doing right by your clients, and standing behind the work,” he says.
