In 2016 the Wellington-based consultancy was founded based on a simple premise: to deliver senior-level expertise across a full project lifecycle, bringing civil engineering design, cadastral and engineering surveying, resource management planning and construction contract administration together under one roof. And with its 10th anniversary nigh, it is not only the occasion for a new website but a renewed articulation of what the firm stands for: finding the way when the path is not clear. Led by Dion, Director and Principal Surveyor and Darcy, Director and Principal Engineer, the 30-strong Orogen team includes civil engineers, licensed and graduate surveyors, resource management planners and environmental specialists. With a strong focus on the lower North Island including Wellington, Kapiti, Horowhenua and Manawatu, Orogen has simplified their clients’ projects by removing messy handovers between firms; projects that would usually require multiple firms are delivered by a single team working across multiple disciplines, from day one of the project. As a result, projects move faster, with fewer delays and less risk of miscommunication. Issues are caught earlier, and decisions are made faster. “With more eyes on the details, we can tackle problems internally and go to clients with a solution, not a problem,” Darcy says. Over the past 10 years, Orogen has delivered hundreds of projects across the region including residential subdivisions, urban infill developments and major infrastructure works, including three-waters systems, pump stations and roading networks. Notable projects such as Woodridge Estate in Wellington and ‘Brookside’ in Whitby highlight the firm’s capability in large-scale, multi-stage developments, while its work with councils and agencies underscores its credibility in the public sector. With Wellington’s steep and dissected terrain and complex network of territorial authorities and requirements, Orogen has spent a decade building deep, specific knowledge of the Wellington environment — to the great relief to many of its clients, who count on Orogen for its local knowledge and technical expertise. Clients also appreciate Orogen’s honesty and accountability, even when the news is hard; they have confidence in the team’s thinking process, and they value the fact that Orogen does what it says it will do. Looking ahead, the firm’s vision is not centered on rapid expansion, but on depth — continuing to do complex work well, while developing the next generation of engineers and surveyors. With graduates mentored directly by senior professionals and supported through industry accreditation pathways, Orogen is investing in capability that will carry it through its next decade. “When we do well, our staff do well,” Dion says. “From the outset, we wanted to make sure that the people involved in our company were valued and appreciated. “The Covid years and economic recession were tough, but we decided to hang in there together — and doing so has helped us springboard into new opportunities.”
