The company has built its reputation on providing distribution solutions tailored specifically to the forestry industry, and recent developments show a clear emphasis on smarter, more connected logistics. “A culture of continuous improvement underpins McCarthy Transport with new systems and technologies helping to deliver more efficient and reliable outcomes for customers,” says company operations manager David Joll. He says a key shift has been the move to centralised dispatch, bringing logistics coordination into a single team. By combining this model with the WSX forestry logistics platform and EROAD tracking systems, the company now has real-time visibility across its fleet, allowing it to respond quickly to changing conditions in the forest and along the supply chain. This visibility enables us to better manage the peaks and troughs of production, as well as constraints such as port delays, resulting in a more consistent and streamlined level of service,” explains David. echnology is also playing a major role in fleet performance and compliance. Every truck is equipped with systems that synchronise jobs directly from dispatch and GPS tracking and electronic logbooks provide live data on vehicle location, road user charges and driver work hours. “Integrating these tools has improved both productivity and safety, giving us greater control over its operations while supporting drivers in managing fatigue and compliance requirements,” says David. Another safety innovation to support drivers has been participating in the NZTA Waka Kotahi Alternative Fatigue Management Scheme Trial – Logging Division. David says the initiative allows more flexible management of driver work and rest hours to maintain strict safety standards. He says the trial has led to measurable improvements including reduced downtime, better scheduling and enhanced fatigue management across the fleet. Further advancements include the introduction of AI-powered in-vehicle camera technology designed to detect unsafe driving behaviour and reduce driver distraction. Alongside this, practical innovations such as auto-tensioning systems on logging units are helping to minimise driver injury while improving load security. Operationally the company has continued to expand its capabilities beyond transport. It now manages multiple log yards, providing services that include log storage, inventory management and loadout coordination. David says these operations give it greater control over the flow of logs between forests, mills, rail and port facilities. “This hands-on involvement across the supply chain allows us to deliver more integrated solutions, ensuring logs move efficiently even in complex or constrained environments.” The company’s in-house engineering workshop is another point of difference. David says that by designing and building its own logging trailers, it can create equipment suited to New Zealand conditions, including lower-profile units that improve weight distribution and on-road stability. Environmental considerations are also being addressed through practical measures, including the use of retread tyres to reduce emissions, careful management of noise and dust and systems to protect waterways and manage waste.
