Owned and led by director Ray Fleming, the company has grown signi icantly since he purchased it in 2014, evolving from a small local contractor into a well-resourced business with diverse services. Today, it remains irmly family-owned, with Ray’s children actively involved across the business. O ice administrator Dahna Fleming says family connection is central to how the company operates day to day. This transition has reinforced the family-led nature of the business while supporting its continued growth. From its Mamaku base, Sherlock Contracting’s services include earthworks, demolition, site preparation, roading, and equipment hire, supported by a modern leet of machinery and experienced operators. It also operates its own certi ied Class 2 land ill, including asbestos disposal capability, which provides both a practical advantage on projects and an additional year-round revenue stream that is less subject to economic cycles. “There’s a real synergy there,” Dahna says. “We’ve got the contracting side and the land ill together, and that makes us very competitive.” This integrated model allows Sherlock Contracting to manage projects e iciently from demolition and site clearance through to ground preparation, helping clients streamline timelines and reduce costs. A signi icant portion of work comes through established relationships with other contractors and developers in the region, particularly on subdivision and infrastructure projects. These collaborations are built on trust and consistency, something Dahna says is essential in a regional market. “You’ve got to have those relationships. We help them and they help us when we need it.” Despite employing a relatively small team of about nine sta , the business is well equipped, with a leet of excavators ranging up to 24 tonnes, along with transport capability that allows machines to be moved e iciently between sites. This lexibility enables Sherlock Contracting to take on a wide range of projects while maintaining control over delivery. Its workload has remained consistent, supported by ongoing government-driven housing development activity across Rotorua and the wider Bay of Plenty, with the land ill operation helping to balance quieter periods in contracting. Based in Rotorua, the business combines the delivery capability of Goodrick Contracting with the specialist drilling and underground services of Duyvestyn Drainage Limited. While both entities retain their individual identities, they now operate in alignment, creating a fully integrated delivery model that spans projects from initial groundworks through to completion. Business development manager Dan Goodwin says the combination created a business model that enabled self- performance across multiple stages of work. “The two businesses complement each other and go hand-in-hand. We can go start to finish on projects, integrating civil with drilling, drainage and earthworks.” That integration is reflected in a team of more than 50 staff delivering a wide array of projects that includes three waters, full subdivision development, concrete placing and asphalt solutions for roadworks and paving. The business’s capability is backed by a wealth of local knowledge, including an understanding of highly variable local ground conditions ranging from extensive geothermal fields to pumice soils. “We can react quickly to conditions and solve problems as they come up,” says Dan. DDL Goodrick’s current work includes leading stage 2 of the Tarawera Sewerage Scheme at Lake Tarawera for Rotorua Lakes Council, a project focused on replacing ageing septic tanks with a modern reticulated wastewater network. The $11 million scheme is designed to protect the health of the community, the lake, and downstream catchments by reducing the risk of wastewater entering groundwater, connecting all properties to a new sewer line. Work involves installing low-pressure grinder pump systems on individual properties, connecting around 480 homes in the lakeside settlement to the wider network. Existing septic tanks are removed and replaced with new holding systems, which feed into the reticulated system. “So basically, we drill, we dig them out, we connect them. There’s a lot of moving parts.” Delivery has required careful coordination across a wide range of site conditions and stakeholders, which includes homeowners, iwi, hapū, council and environmental groups, making communication a vital part of the process. The project highlights the benefit of the amalgamation, with DDL working alongside Goodrick crews on drilling, trenching and connections, allowing greater control over quality and programme, while reducing reliance on external contractors. Beyond individual projects, the company has a lot of heart for the community and maintains a strong local focus. During the past eight years, close to $40 million has been reinvested into the Rotorua economy through wages and procurement, supporting local suppliers, contractors and families.
