20 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Hutt City Council T T Russell Fredric New phase for Silverstream Landfill project Hutt City Council waste and recovery manager Geoff Roberts says the site spans six to eight hectares. Civil works for this is being undertaken by Leach and Co. Hutt City Council is progressing with the final phase of major infrastructure development at the Silverstream Landfill. Work includes constructing and lining new landfill cells, building essential infrastructure, and preparing the site for continued use over the next 30 years. A dedicated cell for asbestos disposal will also be built. The landfill has been in operation since the 1970s. It is owned by Hutt City and Upper Hutt City councils and operated by Hutt City. Hutt City Council waste and recovery manager Geoff Roberts says the site spans six to eight hectares within a steep natural gully that has been developed in stages. The original section, like many landfills of its era, was unlined. “The second stage that we are currently in is all fully lined, with leachate and gas collection systems.” The landfill receives about 150,000 to 160,000 tonnes of waste annually. “The current work involves building over parts of the earlier landfill in a process known as piggybacking. We are now into phase three of stage two which is the final phase.” Civil works for this is being undertaken by Leach and Co which was awarded the construction contract, in collaboration with the council’s consulting engineers in what is a complex and technical project.
