Tūpore contributes 10% of its profits annually to the George Foundation, a charitable trust established by the Gales. In 2023, the company topped the charity up with an additional $100,000 to meet growing post-cyclone community needs. From firewood and funeral support to full-year wraparound care for vulnerable individuals, the foundation reflects Tūpore’s unwavering belief that business can, and should, be a force for good. “Our people are at the heart of everything,” says Gavin. “We profit share at Christmas, we run a koha scheme to help with unplanned hardship, and we have Auntie Chrizzy on the team whose role is simply to check in with staff and make sure they’re okay. If they’re not, we step in.” That grassroots support was a lifeline during Cyclone Gabrielle, when several employees lost their homes. With no formal budget for the koha scheme, Tūpore acted immediately to help, demonstrating the kind of responsiveness and empathy that caught the attention of award judges. Tūpore is also actively future-focused. A strategic growth plan is now in play, including a $2.5 million upgrade to the asphalt plant, and initiatives designed to improve profitability while maintaining the social and environmental values that underpin the company. Tūpore is also investing in upskilling and leadership development, ensuring opportunities for staff to grow within the business.
