Set to complete its expansion in July, thousands of satisfied Hawkes Bay patients have already made the most of Kaweka Hospital. The Kaweka Hospital’s 31 bed ward, specialist consulting rooms, pharmacy and cafe will open in July at the already thriving complex. This is alongside four operating theatres with post-procedure recovery and overnight beds. Director Dr Colin Hutchison said leading the development had been a huge privilege. “The facilities we create allow thousands of patients a year to receive healthcare and the great thing about a new healthcare facility is it will still be being used in many years time. “Kaweka has removed facility constraints for the region, with many thousand patients now receiving healthcare at Kaweka each year. We receive great feedback from our patients.” Dr Hutchison has a proven track record in healthcare development, he led the creation of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s renal unit. “This project completes five years of development for Kaweka – at this stage we have no plans for more expansions.” Stage one was a $40 million investment while stage two brings the total investment to $100 million. The hospital also has a contract for service to provide surgical provision for the region’s public hospital. The independent community-led hospital in Hastings is the first in over 100 years to be built in the region. Keys to its success have been the hospital’s dedicated team working alongside Dr Hutchison. The perioperative manager is Anouk Doevendans-Lumb.
