| 79 Supreme Construction Taranaki BUILDING T T Karen Phelps Strong client relationships and reputation for quality While many building companies have struggled during the recent construction industry slowdown, Taranaki-based Supreme Construction has bucked the trend, with a busy workload thanks to its strong client relationships and reputation for quality workmanship. “We have been flat out,” says company owner Jason Wills. “We have one client for example that believes that whether it’s a recession or not you have to keep building. We are lucky to have clients that have that vision.” Since it started in 2015 Supreme Construction has undergone significant expansion from its modest beginnings to become a respected contractor handling multi-million-dollar developments across the Taranaki region and beyond. It is about to celebrate its 10 year anniversary in July. “Reaching ten years in business, considering I only wanted a business for me and one apprentice and instead ending up with 15 staff and undertaking major commercial developments, is something to be really proud of. I have an amazing team and it’s been a great rollercoaster,” explains Jason who spent four decades honing his craft in various construction roles including running his own roofing company for ten years before founding Supreme Construction. The firm’s current project list includes several high- profile builds including an eight-storey tower renovation on Devon Street in New Plymouth. The project, with a timeline of around 18 months, is expected to be completed later this year. “We are doing the demolition and new windows, cladding, internal fitouts and building a new car park,” says Jason. Another significant development in the company’s portfolio is a multi-million-dollar project on Molesworth Street. “We are basically building a sealed building within the existing building. It’s been a very technical project in terms of the engineering,” explains Jason. The complex project involves earthquake strengthening, requiring anchor piles driven 11 metres into the ground. The project includes adding one and a half storeys to an existing structure to create a luxury apartment featuring a formal lounge on the top floor, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, lounge and a swimming and spa pool area below. Despite initial delays due to council and iwi considerations, the development is now progressing steadily. The first two floors of commercial tenancies are expected to be completed around the end of August, with the apartment finalised by the end of 2025. Recently Supreme Construction completed a three-storey office block refurbishment, now being leased by Worley and a fitout for Active+ physiotherapist, demonstrating the diverse range of projects it undertakes.
