Designgroup Stapleton Elliott (DGSE) has had seven projects shortlisted for the 2025 Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Awards. “We’re incredibly honoured to have such a diverse range of our work recognised this year,” says Nigel Dong, DGSE’s Managing Director. “Each project reflects our commitment to creating spaces that resonate with their communities.” Manukura School’s new campus in Palmerston North is described by the practice as a project that transcends conventional educational architecture. The facility seamlessly integrates academic excellence, kaupapa Māori principles and high-performance sport within a holistic learning environment. “This wasn’t just about building classrooms - it was about creating a statement of identity and aspiration for Māori education,” says Brian Elliott who was the project Architect for Manukura School. “The design is structured around interconnected learning hubs that foster collaboration and whānau engagement.” The 4,700m² campus features learning spaces organised into two communities, each centred around a wharekai gathering space, with a multi-purpose lobby serving as the school’s vibrant heart. “Students need spaces that reflect their cultural values while preparing them for future challenges,” says Brian. “We incorporated sustainable elements like laminated timber structures and passive environmental strategies that align with Māori principles of guardianship.” Hawke’s Bay Airport Terminal Expansion was another significant project and saw the practice design a cultural landmark for the region inspired by the Kuaka bird’s significance to local tangata whenua. The terminal’s form cleverly mimics the bird’s body, with angled roofs representing outstretched wings and a high-level canopy symbolising the head. “The narrative of the Kuaka guided every aspect of our design process,” explains project Architect Chris Ainsworth. “We wanted arrivals and departures to feel connected to the cultural and environmental context of Hawke’s Bay, creating an authentic sense of place.” Leading manufacturer of sports equipment We cover over 250 products across 30 di erent sporting codes. • School Gymnasiums • School Courts and Fields • Recreation Centres • Planning, Supply and Installation 0800 496 532 | info@gymleader.co.nz | www.gymleader.co.nz www.gbml.co.nz “Culture, horticulture and biofuels sectors.
