The firm’s other shortlisted projects demonstrate its versatility across different architectural categories. Bayview House in Hawkes Bay represents excellence in residential design and Hyde Lane Apartments in Wellington showcases innovation in multi-unit housing. “Each project presents unique challenges that push our creative boundaries,” says Matt Edmonds who was the project Architect for the Bayview House. “With Hyde Lane Apartments, we focused on creating community connections within a dense urban context,” explains project Architect Emma Macann. In the education sector, alongside Manukura School, the practice also secured recognition for the renewal of St Patrick’s College in Wellington. “Educational spaces need to evolve with changing pedagogies while respecting heritage values,” explains project Architect Neil Kemp. The public architecture category features two shortlisted projects including the Hawke’s Bay Airport Terminal and Waiaroha Heretaunga Water Discovery Centre in Hastings. “Public buildings carry significant responsibility to engage and inspire communities,” says project Architect Ezra Kelly. Rounding out the shortlisted projects is Roseville House in Palmerston North, recognised in the Small Project Architecture category. “Scale doesn’t limit ambition,” says project Architect Steve McDonald. “Sometimes the most impactful architecture happens in compact spaces.” Nigel says that the multiple short listings reflect Designgroup Stapleton Elliott’s collaborative approach and dedication to place-based design. The firm emphasises that it approaches each project with fresh perspective rather than imposing predetermined styles. With projects spanning across housing, education and public architecture, Designgroup Stapleton Elliott has demonstrated a track record of designing projects across a range of typologies. Its success in the awards shortlist highlights how it continues to shape New Zealand’s built environment through thoughtful, culturally responsive architecture that balances innovation with respect for context and community.
