It is a striking depiction of local experience stretching back more than two decades. “It is everything from new housing, property subdivisions and light commercial through to residential alterations and additions such as bathrooms, kitchens and garage projects,” explains Director and Senior Architect Lance Goodwin, who co-founded the practice with fellow architect Ged Cosgrove in 2001. “Residential work has long been our mainstay and drove our growth, mostly in the Wellington region, for the first 10 years. From 2010, we also expanded into projects from Queenstown to the far north.” Increasingly, Cosgrove Goodwin Architects is also responding to demand in the commercial market, particularly in the early childhood education sector. The team is the design partner for Little Learners with a new centre in Newlands currently under construction and another in the planning phase. They are also working on a renovation project for a local kōhanga reo. Another exciting project on the go this year is a multi-unit residential and commercial development, Jackson Beach, within the heritage precinct of Jackson Street, Petone. “It’s all about balancing out what we do across a range of projects,” says Ged, who leads the practice alongside Lance as a senior architect and director. “Yet residential work is still our core focus as that’s where we have come from.” One of their larger projects, undertaken just before Covid, involved the refurbishment of a 1960s modernist architectural building on Oriental Parade called Kensington Apartments. “It required substantial maintenance and upgrades throughout as many components were in original condition – we got some really nice feedback on it afterwards,” says Lance, who notes they have also designed a number of memorable, standout homes for clients through the years. This NZIA practice is a member of the NZ Green Building Council with an ongoing interest in designing alternative, high-quality sustainable homes. The practice is constantly exploring and refining new ways to improve how homes function, particularly from an energy-efficiency perspective and alternative construction methods and materials. Ged and Lance first met as architecture students at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington in the late 1980s. By then, Ged had also acquired landscaping and building experience, adding a further foundation to his career in architecture. From 2001, Cosgrove Goodwin Architecture quickly became established as the local architectural practice for the Ngaio/ Khandallah area. Today, Cosgrove Goodwin Architects Ltd has a depth of experience that few could match, bringing with it expert insights on consenting rules/regulations and considerable capability across a full range of architectural services. The six-strong team of two architects, an architectural designer, two architectural technicians and a studio manager is supplemented by an Auckland architectural contractor who acts as their representative there. Four members of the team have worked together for more than 10 years.
