A fresh new look is on the way for one of New Plymouth’s most recognisable landmarks. Prime Property Group has embarked on the Centre City External Façade Update, a major refurbishment that promises to transform the mall’s exterior and breathe new life into the CBD. Marketing Manager Ryan Jacobs says the project is about more than appearances. “These works are not simply about updating the building, but about future-proofing an essential community space, enhancing the shopping experience, and reaffirming Centre City’s role as a vibrant, safe and welcoming cornerstone for Taranaki residents and visitors alike,” he says. Project Manager Darryn Andrews agrees the upgrade was well overdue. “Fifteen years ago, the building received a facelift but since then, it has been hammered by New Plymouth’s coastal weather, at the mercy of the salt spray and the wind,” he says. “It was looking very tired.” The multi-stage project is already underway, with demolition work marking the completion of Phase One. “This stage involved the removal of existing façade features, including all decorative green poles from both sides of the building and the blade signs above the two Gill St entries,” Darryn says. Stage one also involved removing the Gill Street signage wall panels. The façade redesign includes three modernised entries to the mall - two on Gill Street and one on St Aubyn Street - each featuring illuminated glow boxes.
