Business Central November 2025

| 89 Drillcore now expanded into Cambridge Strong relationships with engineers, councils, and clients have been central to Drillcore’s growth. A sharp pick-up in demand has prompted Drillcore owner Matt McBreen to expand his well-equipped drilling business beyond its Rotorua base, and into Cambridge. Since launching Drillcore in 2014, Matt has grown the company through the Covid pandemic and the more recent recessionary period in the New Zealand economy. Now, with the construction industry in sharp recovery, the business is experiencing strong demand. “Projects that have been in the planning stage for some time are finally coming onstream, and this has prompted our expansion into South Waikato,” Matt says. “Our work already spans Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay and the wider central North Island, so setting up a branch in Cambridge is a logical step. “We’re in the process of finalising a site and expect to be fully operational there before the end of the year.” Matt launched Drillcore with a single Australian-made Tractor Mounted Explorer 85 rig, but the company’s fleet has grown sharply over the years to include a Sonic Sample Rig SRS ML Duo, two Georig 220s, an eight-tonne Caterpillar digger, an ATX 1500 track-mounted drill rig with support equipment, and a John Deere Tractor and side-by-side ATV. A standout addition to the fleet is the Sonic Sample Rig SRS ML Duo, which was purpose-built in collaboration with leading Dutch developers Eijkelkamp in 2019-20. Matt worked closely with the Eijkelkamp design team to tailor the rig to meet the demanding conditions of New Zealand projects. The Duo is unique in that it is equipped with both a sonic drill head and a rotary drill head, giving it the versatility to deliver superior core recovery in challenging ground conditions, while also offering the flexibility of conventional rotary drilling. This combination improves speed, efficiency and sample quality, making it one of the most advanced rigs of its kind in the country. “These investments have expanded our capability and versatility,” Matt says. “With this fleet we can deliver across the full spectrum of geotechnical and environmental drilling, from residential and commercial sites through to large-scale infrastructure projects.” Equally important to Drillcore’s success is its highly skilled and motivated team. “Our people have a real can-do attitude, backed by a strong safety culture,” Matt says. “The rigs are the tools, but it’s the team that makes the difference.” T T Hugh de Lacy Strong relationships with engineers, councils, and clients have also been central to Drillcore’s growth. By delivering accurate results, meeting tight deadlines, and maintaining open communication, the company has developed a reputation for reliability across the regions. Its collaborative approach has helped foster long-term partnerships and repeat business, and ensures projects are completed to the highest standards. Matt’s drilling career began in Auckland straight out of high school with Boart Longyear, one of the world’s largest drilling companies. After nearly a decade there, he gained further experience in Australia before returning home in 2013 to establish Drillcore. With new rigs, expanded capability, and a new base in Cambridge, Drillcore is well- positioned to continue delivering high-quality results for New Zealand’s challenging drilling environment.
