When Jason Smith’s former boss retired in 2017, the Hawera-born builder faced a choice: find another job or strike out on his own. He chose the latter, founding Jason Smith Construction Ltd, a company that has become known across Taranaki for its versatility in residential, commercial and rural building. Licensed building practitioner, Jason has a lifetime of building experience and leads an eight-strong team taking on a versatile range of building projects from bespoke new builds, renovations and extensions, commercial jobs, and even new cow sheds. “I didn’t want to just do one thing,” Jason says. “We do a bit of everything but over time cow sheds have become a bit of a specialty.” Taranaki’s booming dairy sector has created demand for modern, functional, and durable milking facilities. Over his career, Jason has had a hand in more than 30 sheds across the region, with 8–10 completed since going independent. “People think a cow shed is just a roof and some rails, but there’s a lot more to it,” Jason says. “You’ve got your slopes and platforms, and all the underground pipework to install. We do the effluent pipes, the whole lot.” Jason Smith Construction partners with Alpine Buildings of Timaru, who supply kitset materials for the dairy sheds. Alpine handles design, while Jason and his crew take care of installation and finishing. “They take care of the design and all the paperwork, which frees us up to focus on building,” says Jason. Jason’s pole-shed model has become especially popular. Unlike traditional steel-leg designs, his timber pole approach allows the entire roof to be framed on the ground, then lifted into place in one piece by crane. This method makes the build faster, safer, and sturdier. “It’s equally as strong, if not stronger, than steel,” says Jason. “Plus, it’s lighter, airier, and a better working environment for farmers spending long hours inside. The whole process is just quicker and cleaner.” A recent dairy shed on Kaweora Road in Opunake has been a success. “We put the shed up and the rotary platform came from Matamata, and we helped install it with the local platform guy.” The completed shed earned rave feedback from its farming owner. “He’s loving it. It’s light and airy. A much nicer place to milk,” says Jason. Jason and his crew, which includes his son Jae, also produce their own pre-cast panels, T T Bernadette Cooney pour concrete foundations, and manage site work in-house, which keeps costs and timelines under control. “That helps us work more efficiently and gives clients confidence.” That straight forward, problem-solving approach has earned him a reputation as one of the most versatile builders in South Taranaki.
