T T Karen Phelps T Tto page 100 Haarlem Build has demonstrated its capability to deliver complex, high-end construction with the completion of Hardcourt House in Paraparaumu, a striking two-level residence that featured on television programme Grand Designs NZ and showcased the local building company’s expertise in premium architectural projects. The five-bedroom family home, designed by Holmes Architecture, presented unique challenges from the outset when construction began in November 2023. Built on a subdivided section that previously housed a tennis court and swimming pool, the project required innovative solutions for site access and construction. “The house is built a bit back from the front where the garage is at the top of the house. We had to put in temporary access from the road to the bottom of the site,” explains Haarlem Build project manager Will Mowbray. The project’s elevated stakes stemmed from the personal relationship between the clients, Bridget and Graeme Clarke, and Haarlem Build’s leadership, adding emotional investment to the professional challenge. “Building a house is hard enough but friendship certainly adds another layer. I had to have real confidence in everything we were doing,” says Will. The home was arranged to maximise natural light, privacy and connection to its outdoor environment. The open-plan kitchen and living area serve as the vibrant hub of the house, flowing effortlessly to the outside. At street level, a double garage provides convenient access, while a separate living area offers versatility for guests or multi- generational living. Hardcourt House showcases sophisticated material selection and construction techniques, featuring a concrete slab on grade foundation with timber joists above and portal frames creating expansive living spaces. The exterior combines Abodo Vulcan timber cladding with JSC Luna wood and Nu-Wall vertical Aluminium cladding topped by a standing seam metal roof. The home’s interior specification reflects the high-end brief, incorporating timber overlays in living areas, plush carpeting in bedrooms and full-height bathroom tiling.
