| 83 BUILDING Eves Construction Next to MRI and CT scan-X-ray transportables are Matej Brand, Jeramaia Joyce, Daniel Pearson, Jonty Curtis, Sam Mckeich, Ryan Eves & Rowan Eves. “We also build modular portable MRI units for hospitals on behalf of another company. The units are constructed at our site here, and then transported throughout the country. The units are all copper lined, and normally five metres wide by twelve metres long, and sometimes there will be three pieces to the overall unit. We send our team to where ever the unit is going to and put it all together, tying it in with the existing hospital buildings on site, ready for fitout. On average we build three units each year. We have recently finished three medical modules that were all connected to make one 3000sqm facility that included MRI, Radiology and administration, for Hastings Hospital.” Apart from the perfect central location, proximity to Mt Ruapehu’s ski fields, and Lake Taupo, Ryan says one of the key benefits of building in Ohakune is that sections tend to be a lot cheaper than other parts of the country. “Currently you can typically purchase a 600m2 – 700m2 section here for well under $200,000. There’s a lot of land available in the area, and a lot of people want to develop subdivisions at the moment. Over the last six months we have noticed a significant slowdown in the number of new builds, and that can be attributed to the increase in interest rates, the cost of living, and uncertainty with future ski operations on the mountain. We’re fortunate to have had other streams of work, including a project with the local iwi, Ngati Rangi, to keep us going. Last year we built six social housing duplex buildings for the Ruapehu District Council, which were completed on time and under budget.” The success of any business is in no small part down to the team behind it and Ryan acknowledges that the Eves Construction team is no exception. “Including Trish and Katherine, we have a total team of ten. Along with five tradesmen, we also have three apprentices, all in their second year now and doing very well. We think it’s important to have apprentices, because you get to develop their knowledge and skills to the high standards of the business. We’ve also assembled a list of preferred subcontractors that we use on every job and have very good relationships with them.” Congratulations to Rowan, Ryan & Staff past & Present. Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of a team that prides itself on quality. All the best for the future!
