| 109 “A great build is about more than bricks and timber – it’s about trust, understanding and clear communication.” BUILDING New Leaf Builders T T Karen Phelps New Leaf Builders has grown to a team of 10. A fresh start, a new home or a renovation that breathes life into an old home: whatever the brief, New Leaf Builders is all about helping Wairarapa families turn good ideas into reality. Established in 2022 by Tama and Laura Leaf, New Leaf Builders has grown to a team of 10 that comprises a good mix of experience, practical know-how, and plenty of skills on the tools. “While we’ve grown quite a bit since we started, the focus has always been on completing good quality work and looking after people,” Tama Leaf says. The business tackles a roughly even split between custom-designed new builds and renovations, being skilled in both revitalising older Wairarapa homes, and creating plans and offering full new build contracts. There has certainly been plenty of variety in the projects so far. One of the standouts was an old church that was relocated onto a client’s property. The New Leaf team stripped the building right back to its bones and started again, while taking great care to retain its character. “It was an awesome renovation,” Tama says. The team has also completed plenty of new builds, including working with other companies on their showhomes, an experience has helped New Leaf develop its own new-build work. For Tama, there is also something particularly satisfying about a good bathroom renovation. The people side of the business is something Tama is particularly passionate about. A building site is a workplace, after all, and he wants it to be somewhere the team enjoys turning up to each day. “I find it important to keep a positive work environment,” he says. “If employees have a great mindset and have fun while they’re working, it will reflect in quality workmanship and job enjoyment.” That attitude also carries through to client relationships. Renovating a home can be a pretty big deal, especially when walls are Building with people in mind coming down and bathrooms are being ripped out, so New Leaf wants the experience to feel as stress-free as possible. “Sometimes a big renovation is a bit daunting, so to be able to feel comfortable with the people working on your home can make the process feel more natural and easy-going,” Tama says. “We want to form good, strong relationships and friendships with our clients.” Whether it is a major renovation, a brandnew home or a smaller repair job, the team aims to keep communication clear and make sure clients know what is happening at all times. While Laura is originally from the Wairarapa, Tama now considers the region home, too. New Leaf has a strong focus on giving back to the community, having supported local organisations such as the Pioneer Premier Rugby team, Special Children’s Christmas Party and Ngā-iwi Netball Team.
