126 | T T Kelly Deeks Elmdale Building Company is positioning itself at the centre of growing demand for residential construction in the Wairarapa, as the region continues to attract new development, lifestyle buyers, and investment in quality housing. Based in Masterton and servicing the wider district, Elmdale Building Company director Aidan McWilliams says the business has been operating at full capacity, supported by strong word of mouth, visible local presence, and increasing recognition across the region. Founded after nearly two decades of industry experience across both residential and commercial building, Elmdale Building Company has built a reputation for new builds, renovations, extensions, and architecturally designed homes. The team currently completes about four projects at a time, balancing workflow carefully to maintain quality and momentum. A key strength for Elmdale Building Company is its versatility across a broad range of residential projects, allowing the team to adapt to different client needs, design complexity, and site conditions. From architecturally designed homes with high end finishes through to practical renovations, extensions, and bespoke lifestyle builds, the company is equally comfortable working at both the detailed boutique end of the market and larger scale residential construction. Aidan says this flexibility comes from the team’s combined experience and strong subcontractor relationships, which enable them to tailor delivery while maintaining consistent quality and project control across every build. One of the company’s current projects is its own build just north of Masterton, a large home designed to take advantage of extensive views across the Tararua Ranges. The project includes large format openings and six metre doors running along the deck, reflecting the type of high specification work Elmdale is increasingly known for. The company is also working on a complex build at Riversdale Beach using SIPs panels, a system Aidan says is gaining traction for its efficiency and performance benefits, and one which Elmdale Building has recently been certified to install. “With the right design, these builds can be cost-comparible to conventional build methods,” he says. “And people will start saving money on their power bills as soon as they move in.” While the current home under construction is not targeting passive house certification, it incorporates a range of passive design features including mechanical ventilation and air transfer systems, polished concrete floors designed to capture afternoon sun, and a mix of open plan living spaces with targeted thermal performance. Aidan says Elmdale Building has grown steadily through its commitment to quality, trust, and long-term client relationships rather than short-term gain. “We do not cut corners,” he says. “We prioritise high quality and a great relationship with our clients. We focus on honesty from the start and as much transparency in pricing as possible.” Having grown up in the region then returned after working in Christchurch, Aidan says he started Elmdale Building with a focus on high quality services. “We have built a great team including some amazing subcontractors who are vital to what we do. I have known many of them for years, and we can rely on consistent quality.” Elmdale’s strength lies in its versatility, from boutique architecturally designed homes through to complex residential builds, positioning the company well as Wairarapa continues to expand.
