| 21 MB Century ENERGY Full range of geothermal & energy services MB Century is known as a one-stop-shop for large scale clean energy projects. Owned by the Tūaropaki Trust since 2015 and based out of Wairakei/Taupō, MB Century offers a full range of geothermal and energy services making it New Zealand’s only end to end energy solutions provider. They’re known as a one-stop-shop for large scale clean energy projects as they build, run and maintain heavy renewable energy infrastructure from start to finish, especially geothermal and hydro-power: they handle everything from drilling deep into the earth for steam to building and managing the physical power stations that supply electricity to the grid. With its roots deep in the formerly government run State Hydro-electric Department, which in 1958 was renamed the New Zealand Electricity Department, MB Century has been through private and public ownership, national and international. It has decades of technical expertise and inventive thinking behind it and a multi-disciplinary team united in the goal of delivering world-leading energy solutions, and creating economic value for their clients, while building industry capability, developing strong communities and safeguarding the environment. Formed by an amalgamation of 279 Māori families (representing seven hapū northwest of Taupō) to create economic opportunities while protecting the whenua, the land, for future generations when local native forest mills were closing down, the notion of guardianship is central to the Tūaropaki Trust and MB Century alike. The physical environment is sacred. Kaitiakitanga, the responsibility to protect that environment, is a key driver in their collaborations with business partners and engagement with mana whenua, and they measure their activities and practices against their impact on waterways, air and whenua, the land. Not surprising then that they should engage with the notion of sustainability in two different but complementary ways. Integrated sustainability expands its definition and what’s needed to achieve it to include the four dimensions of social, economic, environmental and cultural. Infrastructure sustainability is the ability to maintain rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non-renewable resource depletion, that can be continued indefinitely. It’s an important expression of responsibility in a world where technological advances and population growth combine to create an increasing demand for the construction and maintenance of infrastructure. They recently built New Zealand’s first green hydrogen plant co-owned by the Tūaropaki Group and Obayashi Corporation, and joins other assets the group owns and operates including its geothermal power station, 11 hectares of geothermally heated glass houses, and their milk powder factory which uses geothermal heat. Commissioned in March 2021 it’s New Zealand’s first Carbon-free Hydrogen Production facility and can process up to 250 normal cubic metres of hydrogen per hour. It uses electricity drawn directly from the renewable Mōkai geothermal power station near Taupō. MB Century provided project management oversight, construction support, and the development of operating procedures through to the operation and maintenance of the plant. They successfully delivered hydrogen for their client and a greener outcome for the planet. 65 Matai St P 07 378 6067 W eandj.nz SPECIALISING IN E & J Contractors are proud to be associated with MB Century • House Drainage • Civil & Commercial • Sewer • Stormwater • Soakholes • Water Reticulation • Butt & Fusion Welding • Wastewater Treatment Systems • Fibreglass Jointing & Fabrication • Pump Stations T T Virginia Wright
