New self-storage units being built on New Plymouth’s Airport Drive are part of a local family initiative to create more space for people’s prized possessions. Locked-in Secure Storage owner Brendon Thomson said the facility should be open in November, and is designed to meet growing demand from families, retirees, tradies and businesses needing extra space. He bought a campervan and planned to travel around the South Island, and was looking for somewhere to store his vehicle when he was finished, rather than having to drive it all the way back home. He found it surprisingly difficult to find somewhere in Christchurch that was secure, easy to access and a place he genuinely felt comfortable leaving it. That’s where the business idea came from. “As sections get smaller and more of us move into inner-city living, there’s simply less room for motorhomes, boats, campervans, and other valuable possessions.” “We also heard plenty of stories about tradies working out of sheds that ran out of room years ago, and businesses stacking stock in spare offices.” “So we listened, and built a purpose-designed, secure storage facility with unit sizes to suit everyone, from smaller lock-ups to large vehicle bays.” Also a dairy farmer and developer who has lived on Airport Drive for more than 30 years - the latest business venture next to New Plymouth Airport is a joint project with his builder son Zack. “There is a real need for big vehicle lock ups,” he said. He’s noticed that many baby boomers are also selling up and living on the road, but they need somewhere to store their stuff while away. His own road trip has been put on hold while the new commercial build in New Plymouth takes priority, but at least the locals will be looked after. With easy access at the northern entrance to the city, and every unit protected with the latest security features, this is simply straightforward storage solutions done right.
