Two new commercial buildings rising side-by-side in Gisborne signal a bold new chapter for one of the region’s longest-standing engineering and construction businesses, McCannics. McCannics has served Gisborne and the wider East Coast for more than three decades, completing a substantial body of work across the district in that time. The business began on the outskirts of the district, servicing the surrounding agricultural and forestry sectors, before steady growth made a move into Gisborne inevitable. It settled at its current 59 Awapuni Road site and has since become a trusted name throughout the region. That adaptability has come to define the company. Following the 2007 earthquake, McCannics played a key role in the structural strengthening and rebuilding of a number of Gisborne CBD landmarks - from the Albert Building and Cotton On premises to the New Zealand Post/Kiwi Bank building on Gladstone Road - helping preserve the district’s heritage for future generations. Its ability to fabricate engineering solutions in-house, and to control quality from the shop floor through to the construction site, delivers a level of detail and accountability that sets the business apart. The acquisition of Coresteel Gisborne builds directly on those decades of multi-trade experience, positioning McCannics to deliver at greater scale using the latest construction and manufacturing technology. Coresteel gives the business access to proprietary systems such as DonoBeam framing - a different approach to construction that enables larger clear spans without internal columns - backed by automated manufacturing that would be difficult to replicate locally. The franchise also connects McCannics to the wider Coresteel network and its franchisor, the Whangārei-based Donovan Group, opening the door to specialised national design and engineering resources for local clients. The benefits of that capability are already visible on the ground. Through Coresteel Gisborne, McCannics is delivering two significant commercial projects: a new purpose-built workshop and offices for TDX at 6 Aerodrome Road, Matawhero, and a larger warehouse and office building for ITM nearby. Both have been around two years in the making across design, agreements, engineering and council processes, with civil works, concrete foundations and steel erection now well advanced. Completion is expected towards the end of 2026. Beyond the buildings themselves, the projects are generating positive flow-on effects for the local economy. TDX’s move creates room for neighbouring businesses to expand, while ITM’s new warehouse and yard will return the building supply merchant to Gisborne after it previously left the city for want of a suitable site. Having ITM next door also brings practical benefits for McCannics, allowing crews to source materials quickly as new projects ramp up. McCannics now employs close to 60 people, with a further six across the wider McCann Group’s property and development arm, and its footprint extends from Wairoa up the East Coast. The business reports early signs of renewed confidence among investors and across the commercial sector, with a growing sense of optimism nationally and encouraging 06 868 4400 | admin@alexhylandplumbing.co.nz Proudly supporting McCann Group www.fire-safety.co.nz (06)-862-5022 office@fire-safety.co.nz Fire Engineering Reports • Construction Monitoring • Emergency Lighting Fire Defects Investigation • Accessibility Design Accomodation Commercial Industrial Pleased to support McCannGroup 021 246 2051 sales@erl.net.nz signs of activity in new building development. Looking ahead, the Coresteel pipeline continues to grow, with McCannics preparing to break ground on a government facility in Gisborne - a project set to bring further work and community facilities to the region. With construction, engineering, hydraulics, electrical and design all under one roof, McCannics is well placed to keep building the future of Gisborne.
