| 39 Ngai Tukairangi Trust HORTICULTURE The Trust kept going, eventually benefiting from the growth of gold kiwifruit and making significant investments in orchards and other businesses. “We have educated engineers, surgeons, professors, and award-winning horticulturalists, but the one I’m most proud of is the drivers licences,” Ratahi says. “One of the biggest issues for Māori kids and the fastest road to crime is when they get their first traffic ticket and a fine they can’t pay. It’s not their fault, it’s the fault of the adults in their lives.” Alongside its education grants, the Trust also provides community grants, distributes free fruit to schools, and invests in the development of people beyond its own shareholders. That philosophy extends into the workforce, with training, study fees, driver licence support, wellbeing services, and plans to strengthen people and culture practices across the business. The commercial strategy is continuing to evolve, too. The Trust has interests in commercial property and other businesses, grows fruit beyond kiwifruit, and has recently developed a business turning fruit that would otherwise be waste into powder for food products that is now being sold around the world. Ratahi says that kind of diversification continues the strategy established by the Trust’s forebears: developing the whenua to create lasting value for its people.
