Photos: taranakimedia.co.nz A major transformation of the western entrance to New Plymouth’s city centre is taking shape, with the West End Crossing bringing together improved pedestrian connections, new public spaces, planting and changes to traffic movement in one of the CBD’s most distinctive precincts. Led by New Plymouth District Council (NPDC), the project covers Devon Street West, Queen Street, King Street and parts of Robe Street, connecting an area containing some of the city’s best-known commercial, hospitality and cultural landmarks. These include the White Hart building, Ngāmotu House, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre, Robe Park and the Clock Tower. The West End Crossing forms part of the wider Ngāmotu New Plymouth City Centre Strategy and is one of the first significant projects identified for the Pūkākā Link, which seeks to strengthen the pedestrian connection between Pūkākā/Marsland Hill and the coast. Construction began with enabling works on King Street in January 2026 before progressing into Queen and Devon streets.
