Compassion Housing’s Cambridge Place development is growing, with the addition of 11 new one-bedroom homes, providing much needed affordable and secure housing for older people in Levin. The project, being delivered in conjunction with Willis Bond, construction company LT McGuinness, and a funding contribution from the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport, is being built within Compassion Horowhenua’s existing Cambridge Place community, to support older residents wanting to live independently. Compassion when it matters the most Compassion Housing manager Peter Barton says the need for affordable housing has been growing across Horowhenua, with high occupancy rates and persistent waiting lists across the organisation’s Levin, Foxton and Shannon portfolio. When the project was assessed, Horowhenua District Council advised there were about 180 households waiting for housing assistance, with the greatest demand for one-bedroom homes. “The Cambridge Place development responds directly to that need,” Peter says. The new homes are intended for people aged 60 and over who can live independently and have limited financial means, with applications assessed according to housing need, affordability and alignment with the purpose of the housing programme. Designed to support people as they age, the homes feature universal design elements, level access, mobility scooter storage, dedicated parking and private outdoor areas. Energy efficiency has also been a focus with the use of solar panels, along with enhanced insulation and quality materials to help reduce ongoing maintenance requirements and living costs. Providing a suitable home is about more than just meeting a basic housing need. Peter says remaining in a familiar home helps people maintain their independence, social connections and routines, while also allowing them to stay close to family and friends. “Most older people want to remain independent for as long as possible. Having a secure home provides stability and peace of mind. Just as important is belonging to a community where people feel connected and supported.” However, Compassion Housing’s role goes beyond providing the homes, with tenancy management, property maintenance and support services helping residents remain Just a guy who cares about his concrete.
