As a result, our buildings have higherquality fastenings and a much tidier look.” BUILDING Former construction engineer Rowan Thornton had a high threshold when it came to he and his partner Tonya Harrison committing to purchasing KiwiSpan Wairarapa five years ago. Rowan was particularly attracted by Kiwispan’s structural elements, which are stronger than many competitors, Tonya says. Wholly New Zealand owned, KiwiSpan manufactures, builds and supplies premium lifestyle, farm, commercial, industrial and habitable buildings, operating a nationwide network of licensees. Kiwispan uses up to 3.0mm-gauge steel for its structural elements, a minimum 0.4mmgauge cladding, extra wide and thicker 0.55mm-gauge flashings, and high-spec bolts and Tek screws. Before the couple took ownership, Rowan worked at a local engineering firm for many years and later established his own construction company. It was there he gained in-depth knowledge of steel shed construction and a solid reputation for high-quality service. “You only have to be inside a Kiwispan building to realise the difference,” Tonya says. “KiwiSpan’s New Zealand designed and engineered brackets utilise industrial bolts, offering a stronger connection. As a result, our buildings have higher-quality fastenings and a much tidier look.” Tonya has a strong background in marketing and supports Rowan with the administrative side of the business, making them a great team, who are backed by hard-working and experienced subcontractors, and a close network of other franchisees, who readily help each other. KiwiSpan Wairarapa covers Norsewood to Ngawi, including Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua, Eketahuna, Masterton, Carterton, Martinborough and Featherston. A feature of KiwiSpan Wairarapa is the popularity of shed homes, which can be anything from a shed with an attached room to a more substantial lifestyle dwelling with decking and an attached garage and storage space. “We’ve discovered that’s our niche here in the Wairarapa. Not all franchises do that; that’s quite a big part of our business,” says Tonya. With his background, Rowan has a strong penchant for design, which shows in Kiwispan Wairarapa’s buildings. He also has the advantage of understanding the most cost-effective way of building, based on his years of experience, both with Kiwispan and in the wider construction industry. A recent example is a shed built for a private client, a sleek and stylish 15m x 12m home workshop that features a 3.6 knee height, custom wall overhangs, additional foundation work to accommodate a car hoist and Colorsteel Ebony low-gloss cladding. Tonya and Rowan are particularly proud of another recent project, a large multi-bay industrial workshop and office purpose-built for Commercial Fleet Service in a collaboration between KiwiSpan Wairarapa and builder Renovations and Redesigns. Measuring 26 x 34 metres and 5.4m in height, the workshop includes two service pits in the main 587 square metre workshop area, a second 104 square metre workshop, a showroom, offices, staff room and bathrooms, plus a mezzanine floor for parts/consumables storage. It is clad in ColourSteel Trimrib, with cedar weatherboards on the showroom/public entrance. “It’s the biggest building we’ve done, so it’s quite a feat for us. Rowan loves these kinds of projects and we worked in with Renovations and Redesigns who subbed out the structure to us and they did the building and another contractor did the foundations,” says Tonya. “We have made a really good relationship with Renovations and Redesigns now and will work with them going forward. It’s a really cool building.” The Government’s Investment Boost, which offers eligible businesses significant tax deductions on new commercial builds, makes it an ideal time to consider making an investment like this, Tonya says.
