108 | Builders do what others can’t With over a thousand completed projects, from custom million-dollar builds to intricate renovations and essential maintenance, JCC Build has made a significant mark on the Waikato region. JCC Build T T Sue Russell “We’ve got great builders and a real sense of team. Everyone is on board and wants both the company and our clients to do well.” BUILDING Since 2016, JCC Build has grown into one of the Waikato’s most respected residential builders, delivering bespoke homes and renovations with innovation, excellence, and integrity. Founded by Will and Sarah Johnston, the company has expanded steadily, building not only homes but a strong culture and reputation grounded in trust and quality. Will set out to create more than just a building company – his goal was to be the “builder of choice for the Waikato region,” forming lifelong partnerships with clients, who trust them with their greatest asset: their home. Business manager Murray Buchanan, a long-time friend of Will’s, joined the team nearly seven years ago, bringing leadership and operational experience to guide the company through a dynamic market. “I had been working for Fonterra and was keen to work in a smaller business just starting out, so when the opportunity came along to lead the business side of the company’s development, I thought that would be a good move – and that’s proven to be the case,” says Murray. Despite industry challenges in recent years, diversification has helped JCC Build remain stable, he says. “Will always had the vision to be the go-to builder in Waikato. So whether a client is embarking on a bespoke new home build, undertaking a high-end renovation, or facing urgent maintenance challenges, we can help.” This broad expertise has made them stronger and more adaptable than many competitors. “Those builders who can diversify beyond new builds will have had a much better chance of navigating these challenging times,” Murray says. He says he’s proud they haven’t had to reduce team size, despite market fluctuations. Will also credits his faith as a key factor in the firm’s resilience. “First and foremost, God provides,” he says. ‘There are blessings in life and business that I can’t explain, so I give credit where it’s due.” This foundation complements the company’s practical strengths. Adaptability is central to how they operate. Whatever comes their way a solution is found to get the job done. “That’s why some homeowners pick us, even after talking to multiple builders – we deliver what others can’t,” says Will. People are at the heart of JCC Build’s success. Will highlights the value of building a strong team: “Every time I felt like I was slowing things down by doing everything myself, I hired someone else. That person took on responsibilities, and we grew.” He emphasises the company’s commitment to building a strong, skilled team where everyone plays a vital role. Not only does this help drive high-quality workmanship, but it also fosters an environment where every member feels valued and invested in the company’s success. “Our growth is driven by teamwork, shared expertise, and a culture that encourages learning and responsibility,” says Will. Murray agrees that culture is as important as the work itself. “We’ve got great builders and a real sense of team. Everyone is on board and wants both the company and our clients to do well.” Growth has also enabled Will to transition more into a director role, supported by a newly hired project manager, allowing the company to scale without compromising quality. With over a thousand completed projects, from custom million-dollar builds to intricate renovations and essential maintenance, JCC Build has made a significant mark on the Waikato region. Looking ahead, Will sees exciting opportunities. “Waikato is home for me. It’s a strong growth region outside Auckland, full of opportunities.” As they prepare for their next chapter, their mission remains clear: to be Waikato’s trusted lifelong building partner – delivering quality homes and inspiring spaces that serve the community for years to come.
