The New Plymouth-based company is carving out a unique niche by delivering stunning, creative homes on smaller budgets and footprints, without compromising on design quality. “If you get creative you can definitely build something very cool on a smaller footprint for a good price,” says Kaleb, who founded his company in 2020 after more than a decade of experience in residential and commercial construction. “There is definitely a market for smaller homes without compromising on design and feel.” This philosophy was perfectly demonstrated in a recent project, a 70sqm, two-bedroom townhouse built on a modest budget of $300,000-$350,000. Through clever design featuring high-pitched raking ceilings and a rumpus attic area with skylight, the compact home feels twice its actual size, leaving the clients amazed at what was possible within their budget constraints. “They went to franchises and were offered shoebox-type homes for the same price,” explains Kaleb. “They could have bought a run-down existing old granny flat for not much less, so when they saw what we could create, they were thrilled.” This client-first approach has helped Kaleb Nolly Building establish itself as a trusted name in the region’s construction industry. After completing a building apprenticeship straight from school, Kaleb has combined traditional building skills with modern technology and creative problem-solving to deliver exceptional results for clients across the spectrum from budget to high end. “My number-one priority is focusing on building those strong relationships,” Kaleb says. “I like to guarantee clients will have a great experience the whole way through, looking after them and delivering an outstanding result.” The company’s approach centres on transparency and clear communication, with Kaleb emphasising the importance of dealing with any issues quickly and efficiently. The company employs a small team, which Kaleb believes gives greater control over quality and timing, as well as enabling it to work on multiple projects simultaneously. “No matter what the project, we always put the client’s best interests first, and stay reliable, ensuring clients are highly satisfied at the end of the job,” explains Kaleb. “It’s a personal approach, going the extra mile, building relationships and trust from the get go.” This focus on client care has seen the business embrace technology to help clients visualise their projects, particularly during the design phase. For a recent re-cladding project, Kaleb used an AI application to show clients various cladding options and colours on a photograph of their existing building, helping them make informed decisions. “I respect that for clients it’s a large investment to undertake a build project, so I’m happy to go above and beyond so they feel secure in the choices they are making,” Kaleb says. The company’s portfolio showcases its diversity – from its first architectural new home build in Strandon, a two-storey, 170sqm home featuring Siberian larch timber cladding, to a luxury property in the high-end Oceanside development. The latter project, spanning 254sqm, features a striking, four-metre brick veneer façade and beautiful built-in timber cabinetry by a joiner, including an American oak barn door with feature glass detail. The company has also tackled complex renovation projects, including an extensive restoration of an 1876 two-storey villa that required structural steel portal work for earthquake strengthening, large retaining walls, and full internal renovation. Currently, the business is working on a spec home in New Plymouth through sister company FM Homes, which Nolly owns with his wife Emma. Emma also assists with administrative duties for both companies, and contributes to interior design aspects.
