22 | Greener pathways to carbon reduction The company’s green hydrogen refuelling network is the most ambitious infrastructure project of its kind in New Zealand. Hiringa Energy T T Karen Phelps REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT New Plymouth-based Hiringa Energy is positioning itself at the forefront of New Zealand’s transition to clean energy with a number of world-leading green hydrogen projects. Hydrogen has long been seen as having massive decarbonisation potential, particularly for hard to abate sectors, such as heavy transport and industry. Hiringa spokesperson Ryan McDonald says hydrogen is often a likefor-like replacement for high-emitting fossil fuels. “One of the great things about hydrogen is its versatility across different applications. For example, it enables transport leaders to meet the dual need for higher productivity and lower emissions – there’s no compromise,” he says. The company’s green hydrogen refuelling network is the most ambitious infrastructure project of its kind in New Zealand. Three stations are already operational in Wiri (South Auckland), Te Rapa (Hamilton) and Milson (Palmerston North). A fourth station near Tauranga is currently operating for B2B customers and will open to the public later this year. When that happens, the network will cover 95% of North Island freight routes, making hydrogen more viable than ever for line-haul freight. There are plans to grow to more than 24 stations across the country by 2030. “Each refuelling station produces stores and dispenses emissions-free green hydrogen on-site using renewable electricity and water through electrolysis. It allows for ultra-fast refuelling in 15 to 20 minutes, equivalent to a 3-4MW fast charger, with minimal effect on vehicle payload and similar range to diesel equivalents,” explains Ryan. “International markets are increasingly looking to decarbonise their supply chains, including those of their global partners, and with hydrogen transport, New Zealand businesses can now reduce their emissions and stand out in a way their competitors can’t.” The modular stations are engineered to scale with industry growth, initially fuelling 10-15 trucks daily, but expandable to accommodate up to 60 vehicles as demand increases. Government support also aims to accelerate adoption, with EECA’s Low Emission Heavy Vehicle Fund able to cover up to 25% of the cost of buying a hydrogen truck, or converting an existing diesel truck to a hybrid-like dual fuel engine. Hiringa is also in advanced planning in its Kapuni Green Hydrogen Project, harnessing Taranaki’s wind resources to decarbonise fertiliser production and transport. The project involves constructing four new wind turbines, reaching 206 metres to tip, that will supply renewable electricity to Ballance Agri-Nutrients’ Kapuni site and produce up to 2000 kilograms of zero-emission green hydrogen daily. It will be used to replace fossil fuels in the production of urea fertiliser, while also fuelling hydrogen vehicles and supplying electricity to the grid. “The project creates a reliable and flexible supply of green hydrogen at a competitive price,” says Ryan. He says currently over two-thirds of urea consumed in New Zealand is imported from the Middle East and China, resulting in substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The Kapuni project will enable domestic production, with lifecycle emissions reduced by up to 90% compared to imported alternatives. During peak periods, the wind turbines can provide renewable electricity for up to 24,000 homes, and the flexible hydrogen production operates during off-peak times, optimising grid efficiency. Ryan says both projects represent critical steps in New Zealand’s journey towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. “New Zealand trades off its pure, premium reputation, and we can future-proof that brand by being an early mover in hydrogen. It’s really exciting.” 0800 289 787 btw.nz SURVEYING ENGINEERING PLANNING ENVIRONMENT Creating a better future with smart solutions delivered safely & responsibly.
