Corebuild Group REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Corebuild Group, the exclusive distributor for Coresteel Buildings Hawke’s Bay, is nearing completion of the Napier Pirates Rugby & Sports Club complex. Located in Tamatea, the project comprises a 523sqm club room and 652sqm changing facility, complete with associated external works. General manager of Corebuild Group and Coresteel Buildings Hawke’s Bay, Alan Cusack, says the project represents a major investment by the rugby club in its future facilities, with Napier City Council serving as a stakeholder in the changing rooms component. “The client approached us and we went through the design process, also assisting them in meetings with council, so it was a full-service model and continues to be so throughout the project,” says Alan. The site’s location on low-lying wetland required innovative solutions, with building platforms constructed more than two metres above existing ground level. Access proved particularly challenging, and the high architectural detail demanded careful coordination between the council, client and Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union, whose training grounds are adjacent to the development and needed to still be easily accessible during the build. Corebuild Group, through its Coresteel Buildings operation, undertook all aspects – from design and engineering through to fabrication and construction – resulting in huge time and cost savings. “All design and fabrication is in-house, giving us complete control over the design, quality and delivery of projects,” says Alan. “When we do our structural design and it has gone in for consent we’ve already completed our shop drawings. Because we can do everything in-house, that alone saves six to eight weeks. “Once consent is granted, fabrication begins immediately at our Coresteel Buildings Whangarei facility, allowing projects to commence more rapidly than traditional construction methods.” Central to the project’s success is Coresteel Buildings’ bracketless cold rolled portal system, capable of achieving significant spans up to 25 metres. Alan says the innovative technology has resulted in large uninterrupted spaces within both the club room and changing facilities, maximising usable areas. “The cold rolled steel system offers numerous advantages, utilising lighter-gauge steel with no on-site welding required, everything is bolted together. “ This methodology ensures incredibly quick erection times, with the structure arriving ready to install, and skilled teams capable of rapid assembly,” he says. The project was made possible due to substantial backing from local businessman Rodney Green and the Rodney Green Foundation, which supports and strengthens the Hawke’s Bay community through funding for sports and community initiatives. The project, which commenced in April 2024, is scheduled for completion in September. “All in all, it was a great collaboration. We’re a local company doing work for a local club. It’s a good example of how teamwork can result in great project outcomes,” says Alan. “It’s a major investment by Napier Pirates Rugby for the future, and to be part of that was a huge privilege and everyone has gone over and above to deliver.” Alan says Corebuild Group and Coresteel Buildings Hawke’s Bay has recently completed a building for Konnect in Onekawa, and is finishing construction for Steel & Tube, also in Onekawa.
