It has been designed to operate efficiently with an industry-proven Store Pro racking system and use of a robot shuttle. The design allows for greater storage of packaging, packed product and orchard bins, so as to increase container loading. In scale, the new 2572sqm store is much larger than the previous two small stores, with that extra space set to yield significant benefits. “Initially, we’re racking two thirds of the new store and leaving a third free for orchard bins. “Even with just two thirds racked, it will increase our packed product capacity by 122%,” explains Vanessa. “In addition, we will be able to store two thousand orchard bins and will have sufficient space for dry storage as well as a staging area that will allow us to pick at least four containers simultaneously.” “The new store will give us more flexibility to store fruit so as to optimise the timing of when it is delivered to the market, to take advantage of changes in market conditions. “It will allow us to provide a better service to our valued current growers, and it is our plan to work with new third-party FAS opportunities also.” The location, next to the packhouse, ensures that product will flow smoothly from the packing line to storage. The packhouse operation employs around 26 seasonal staff from late November until mid-January, packing a range of summer fruit, including apricots, nectarines, peaches and plums. That rises to a team of around 50 for the apple season, running until June/July. As well, MEL employs nine permanent managers and team leaders. MEL is owned by a group of orcharding families in Hawke’s Bay, dedicated to growing quality apples for consumers all over the world. “As a group, we grow a lot of great-tasting, high-colour early Gala strains, and are particularly proud of the quality of our Queen, a variety known for being difficult to grow to the customers’ expectations,” Vanessa says.
