REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Now run by Brett and Roy Hamilton, Levin-based glulaminated timber manufacturer Techlam was set up by their father Andrew Hamilton in the early 1990s, and continues to grow in the engineered timber space. “We work with designers and consultants to streamline efficient designs, while making sure that it goes together on-site quickly. We sell all over the world, which is why we have to make sure that it goes together on-site as intended, as it’s sometimes a long way back to base,” explains managing director Brett Hamilton, who has been working in the family business for 25 years. Engineered timber, also known as mass timber, is a construction material made from layers of timber bonded together, offering high strength and structural integrity. It is increasingly used as a sustainable alternative to steel and concrete. Techlam has recently announced a partnership with Woodspan, bringing together two distinct engineered timber offerings. Both companies use New Zealand-grown radiata pine. In Woodspan’s case, they produce parallel laminated timber (PLT) panels, offering the construction sector strength and installation efficiencies, for floor and roof structures in particular. It’s an ideal complement to Techlam’s precision-engineered structural laminated timber solutions with their versatility across the civil, residential and commercial sectors. “Timber manufacturing expertise takes decades to develop,” Brett says. “The specialised knowledge required for engineered timber production isn’t something you can quickly replace,” he says. “This collaboration helps retain that expertise within our industry.” Produced to combine strength and durability with a strong design aesthetic, Techlam’s range of glulam products has evolved over 30 years to meet the needs of architects and structural engineers. They offer standard laminated timber products, like beams, posts, rafters and trusses for conventional buildings, through to made-to-order, custom timber solutions for more large-scale structures – those where the project demands specially engineered products for expansive span and complex structural patterns.
