Having previously worked as a builder for the franchise, and understanding the values and standards of the business, six years ago Warren Jardine seized the opportunity to purchase David Reid Homes Hawke’s Bay from its former owners. The company covers the whole of the Hawke’s Bay region, and gets to design and build homes in many outstanding areas. “We’re fortunate to work in some lovely landscapes across Hawke’s Bay,” says Warren. “The region has its own special vibe, with the two larger cities and smaller settlements dotted around. It’s a great area to build in.” This year, Warren chose to enter the prestigious Master Builders House of the Year Award with a stunning example of what the company is capable of designing and building – a project he and the team are very proud of. With awards announced on July 14 at the Toi Toi Functions centre in Hastings, Warren says he was delighted to see David Reid Homes Hawke’s Bay receive a gold award for the Central North Island competition in the Resene New Homes $2million-$4million category. “The home is located in a stunning location, and I just knew that we should enter this home,” he says The project, however, got off to an interesting start, Warren says. The clients already had a floor plan and a concrete slab laid at the time they approached Warren to take over the project. “After looking at the site, and the foundation poured, we came to the conclusion we needed to start over, so we demolished the slab,” says Warren. The clients also own a limestone quarry and were keen to see the wonderful architectural features that stone can offer brought into their home. “The home is an impressive 464sqm, and there’s been a lot of thought put into blending natural textures. It is clad in a lovely combination of stone and charred timber, while inside the catheral ceilings are also charred larch, with very generous glazing,” says Warren. It’s not always easy to create a balance of intimate spaces with larger open areas, and showcase grand interior design elements with warmth when working over a large footprint, but this home achieves that to wonderful effect. “We laid stunning herringbone timber flooring, which worked in beautifully with the colour commitment to focus on natural finishes and tones, which set off yhe amazing bold wallpaper and tiling features. And the glazing captures wonderful views of Napier outside.” The home has four bedrooms, each with its own ensuite, and a self-contained loft suite positioned above the garage. Access to this space is by way of an external spiral staircase, making it ideal for guests or as an office. There’s also plenty of natural light flowing in by way of clerestories and skylight features. “Every part of this beautiful home has been thoroughly thought through. No detailing has been overlooked and the craftsmanship is superb,” says Warren. And outside, the attention to detail continues, with thoughtful landscaping working with the land form. The pool is a special feature sitting comfortably in its surrounds and architectural features. “Certainly, the integration of indoor and outdoor has worked perfectly to great effect.” Warren’s key responsibilities are to work in the design space with clients. “I always start the conversation with a site visit and try to ascertain the ‘must have’s’ from the ‘wants’. It’s a case of establishing priorities. Once I have this, I work up a brief and engage with the architect or designer.” Interfacing early with client and architect keeps the project on track and both parties accountable, which Warren says means it gets off to a good start. “As a builder, I’m able to assess the complexity of the structure and advise on what is going to be a cost-effective build process.” Warren says the gold award home project in Poraiti was an absolute pleasure to build, with excellent, very supportive, clients. “We were overjoyed to have received this industry award.
