Strong communication, technical problem solving, and a growing focus on high- quality renovations are helping Peak Building Taranaki build its reputation in a changing residential construction market. Director, Adrian Clough, says while the wider building sector has experienced fluctuations over the past two years, there is still steady activity across Taranaki, particularly from homeowners looking to renovate and future-proof existing homes. Adrian established Peak Building Taranaki after several years spent working as a foreman for reputable and award-winning building companies. He says the move into running his own company was driven by a desire to build a trusted brand focused on quality workmanship and client relationships. “I have always worked in the residential side of things, and renovations are where I really flourish,” Adrian says. “There is a lot more thought, sequencing, and problem solving involved. You need to understand how the house works structurally, and how to solve problems in a practical and cost-effective way.” With more than a decade of experience in construction, Adrian has worked across architectural homes, heritage renovations, landscaping, decks, fencing, kitchens and bathrooms throughout the region. One recent kitchen renovation highlighted the level of detail often required. The project involved lifting and extending a structural beam, correcting a sloping floor, and working around older additions to the home with restricted ceiling heights. “In one corner the floor had dropped about 50 millimetres, so we actually went underneath and lifted the corner of the house back up instead of packing the floor, which would have compromised compliance on the minimum ceiling height. “We also had to reassess where the loads were going, because one beam stopped short from what the plans showed. That sort of thing is where experience becomes important, because if you make the wrong decision you can create bigger problems later.” Adrian believes greater collaboration between architects, designers, and builders can help clients avoid costly redesigns and unrealistic expectations around budgets. “We have seen situations where plans have been drawn up and priced when the client simply could not afford it. Sometimes, those conversations around budget and buildability need to happen earlier.” Having initially spent time training in computer drafting before heading into the construction industry once he realised he wasn’t great at sitting still, Adrian has been increasingly using 3D visualisation software SketchUp to help his clients better understand layouts, functionality, and design choices before work begins. “A lot of people know what they want, but cannot always visualise it. If I spend 30 minutes drawing it up, we are both on the same page and can move forward with confidence.” Adrian says communication has become one of the biggest expectations from today’s clients, particularly during renovations where homeowners may continue living on- site throughout the project. “You become quite close with clients during renovations because they are living through the process. Communication is a massive part of keeping everyone aligned and avoiding surprises.” Alongside technical capability, Adrian says maintaining high standards across his team remains a key priority. “We want things done right the first time. I would rather something take a little longer and be done properly than have to go back and redo it.” Adrian says experienced operators that can balance quality, communication, realistic budgeting, and client expectations will continue to find opportunities. “People still want to improve their homes and invest in their properties. It is about adapting to what clients need, and delivering something that everyone can genuinely be proud of.”
