With more than 250 working on site in New Plymouth, McKechnie is one of Taranaki’s largest manufacturers. At Bell Block, the company extrudes, fabricates and finishes aluminium products used throughout the construction, transport, marine and manufacturing sectors, with sales offices in Auckland and Australia, and a sales/ warehousing operation in Christchurch supporting customers nationwide. Unlike many manufacturers, McKechnie operates as a fully integrated aluminium producer, carrying out billet casting, extrusion, CNC machining, fabrication, anodising and powder coating within the business. McKechnie also distributes to a network of independently owned window and door fabricators under the rapidly growing Omega brand. For managing director Dave Slomp, attracting the right people and helping them build rewarding careers is an important factor in what McKechnie does. “That’s sourcing candidates through advertising locally and, where particular skills are needed, outside the region. We also work with recruitment agencies to help meet our staffing needs.” The scale of the Bell Block operation creates opportunities including, fabrication, finishing, logistics, management/admin and engineering.
