A technically demanding redevelopment on Molesworth Street in New Plymouth has become one of the standout projects in Supreme Construction’s decade-long history, highlighting the Taranaki company’s ability to deliver complex, high-end construction while simultaneously building lasting relationships with its clients. The project involves transforming an existing building into a striking mixed-use development, with commercial tenancies occupying the lower floors and a luxury apartment crowning the upper levels. The work has required extensive earthquake strengthening, including anchor piles driven 11 metres into the ground, as an entirely new structure was created within the original shell of the building. “We are basically building a sealed building within the existing building,” says Supreme Construction owner, Jason Wills. “It has been a very technical project from an engineering perspective.” The redevelopment includes adding one and a half storeys to the existing structure, creating a luxury apartment featuring a formal lounge on the top floor with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, living area and swimming and spa pool below. Jason says one of the project’s centrepieces is a spectacular floating staircase leading from the apartment to a rooftop lounge and crafted from recycled heart rimu salvaged from the demolition of the Metro Plaza. Subcontractor Ultimate Cladding painstakingly removed every nail before machining, planing, sanding and laminating each piece of timber to create perfectly flat treads. Spark Engineering fabricated the steel framework. “It has been a real labour of love and it will be one of the most striking aspects of this project,” says Jason. Attention to detail extends throughout the development. Copper exterior panels change colour in the sunlight alongside contrasting black cladding, and oversized 1200 x 2400mm tiles installed by Company of Tiles create luxurious bathroom finishes. The building also incorporates an ARDEX WeldTec roofing system, composite decking and double-layer Fyreline throughout. “The finishing work and detailing from everyone involved has been outstanding,” Jason says. “The project has relied on exceptional collaboration between Supreme Construction, Elliot Architects, subcontractors and consultants. Our team has worked really hard and we have a great foreman in Jared Corlett. “New Plymouth District Council has also been very supportive. It has been an amazing project and one we are incredibly proud to have been involved in.” He also credits the client for helping make the ambitious project a reality. “The client has great vision of what they want and how they want it done. It is awesome to have such a good client who works alongside our team.” Established in 2015, Supreme Construction has grown from modest beginnings into a respected contractor delivering multi-million-dollar residential and commercial developments across Taranaki and beyond.
